Family
Business - Ronnie Fox is Jethro
When
Ronnie Fox left the East End of London for country life, his neighbours
didn't quite know what had hit them.
"I
was brought up in Upton Park," says Ronnie.
"Now
I live in a proper little village - about a hundred houses and a
pub.
"When
I moved out there they thought a low-life had won the lottery -
looking over their fences at me in the back garden in my long-johns
and a bottle of Thunderbird!
"If
there were stocks in the village I'd be in them all the time. They're
all doctors, vets and insurance brokers and then there's me!"
Ronnie
enjoys the country life and while his girlfriend of 15 years, Fiona,
spends all her time with the horses, he is content with his two
terriers and other animals.
His
big acting break came while working as a carpenter in the theatre.
"My
old man was a theatre chippy. At the time I was earning 拢45
a week and thinking, they're lazy and earning loads more money than
me, I could do that. So
I blagged my way into the theatre as a carpenter.
"A
couple of years later I met Kathy Burke who had come down to do
a play in the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, and she said she could
get me some work as an extra. So I did a bit of work on the Harry
Enfield show with them.
"Then
Gary Oldman came over to make Nil by Mouth, I met him and he gave
me my first speaking role.
"I
was cast in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and I didn't even
have an agent at the time. So Ray Winstone's agent looked after
me for that film, and since then it's been job after job after job!"
His
character in Family Business is the perfect antidote to Marky's
serious nature and, together with Yankee, Jethro is totally at home.
"In
a way we are a bit of a double act if you know what I mean, except
I'm a bit older than him and I've been there, done it all,"
he says.
"We
both think we are better than each other but there is no rivalry,
just a bit of fun between us - we're just trying to get out of working
hard and palm it off on the other one you know... one has it easy
and the other is getting the slack."
When
it comes to sex, though, Jethro is a bit of a misfit. His only sex
scene in Family Business ends in disaster!
"I'm
in this bar with a stripper and she falls off the table on top of
me. One of the ICF boys [Inter City Firm-West Ham United] has brought
her in, so I pretend that I know them all, but really I don't know
any of them," he says.
"I'm
trying to act the big lad - and I end up with the bird. But I'm
all mouth, and when it comes down to business I'm frightened to
death!"
