The pirates of the radio airwaves were no strangers to new technology but when they broadcast live from a ship off the Essex coast they couldn't have imagined that 40 years on their experiences would be re-created and broadcast live on the internet.

From 10 to 17 April the radio station Pirate 大象传媒 Essex takes to the waves, broadcasting 24 hours a day, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of offshore pirate radio.

The presenters will live and work on board the LV18, moored half a mile off the Harwich coastline.

They'll spend seven days and seven nights capturing the pirate era with authentic music, much of it on vinyl.

Among the presenters are original pirates from Radio Caroline and Radio London.

Pirate 大象传媒 Essex will be streamed live on the web, 24 hours a day for the duration of the ambitious project.

It's the first time that programming, other than news and sport, has been streamed live by 大象传媒 Essex.

Pirate 大象传媒 Essex is available online at .

There are also profiles of presenters and you can take a tour of Harwich with 360 degree images of the ship, Ha'penny Pier and Redoubt Fort.

You can also follow life on board with the Ship's Log, updated daily on the website.

Web Reporter Tom Warmington will join the crew on board the ship for the duration of the Pirate experience.

He says: "The Pirate experience is a fantastic opportunity to allow people to listen and remember the days of pirate radio, not only in Essex, but all over the world."

Presenter Steve Scruton, who created the idea for Pirate 大象传媒 Essex, will broadcast live simultaneously on medium wave, FM and the internet.

His afternoon programme will come live from the ship and will be carried on all radio frequencies plus the website.

Steve says: "The original idea was to recreate the sound of the pirates 40 years ago.

"They changed the nation's radio listening habits, giving us all day music stations for the first time.

"I now have the chance to broadcast from a ship in the way those radio pirates did!"

Pirate 大象传媒 Essex Producer Tim Gillett says: "We've been amazed with the emails we've received from pirate radio fans from across the world.

"They were all asking whether it would be available on the worldwide net. I'm so pleased that with the help of the cutting edge skills of Anglia Polytechnic University's Ultralab, the answer is yes."

Pirate 大象传媒 Essex goes live at 9.00am on Saturday 10 April until 1.00am on Saturday 17 April.
