大象传媒 Radio Berkshire and six schools in the county are launching a project to help provide a special meal at a school in South Africa 聳 which celebrates 10 years of democracy at the end of April.

Working with the 大象传媒, Slough Grammar, Westgate Secondary, Windsor Boys, Highdown Secondary, Blessed Hugh Farringdon Catholic School in Southcote and Kendrick Girls School will each raise 拢100 to help pay for a meal for 1,200 children at Nonhlevu Secondary in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The meal, which will be served at the secondary school on 15 April, is being provided as a gesture of congratulations from 大象传媒 Radio Berkshire and the six Berkshire schools to young adults celebrating democracy.

大象传媒 Radio Berkshire reporter Karnie Sharp will be in South Africa to help get the project off the ground.

She says: "I'll be at the school, helping the staff to get the meal ready for the children.

"We will have a guest speaker at the school, her name is Dr Albertina Luthuli and she is a very dear friend of Nelson Mandela. Her father was the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize in the Sixties.

"The whole day event will be covered on 大象传媒 Radio Berkshire."

The project will also involve the twinning of these six Berkshire schools with Nonhlevu Secondary. This will help to establish strong links both in the UK and South Africa.

Karnie Sharp says: "The idea behind the initiative is to provide our youth with some insight into situations where children in other countries attend school under difficult circumstances.

"It is usual for children there to go to school without having a proper meal for days."
