Blue Peter
viewers will today hear the sad news that George the tortoise,
the programme's longest serving pet, has died - from old age.
听
George, whom experts believed was more than 80 years
old, joined the show in May 1982 and over the 22 years which followed
George has been put into hibernation by an amazing 20 presenters.
Blue Peter Editor Richard Marson said: "George was very popular
with several generations of Blue Peter viewers and we will all really
miss him.
听
"Requests for his photo card have often exceeded
those for some presenters and we'll be sending them out to any viewer
who wants a memento of a much-loved pet."
George will be buried in the Blue Peter garden by today's presenting
team of Konnie Huq, Simon Thomas, Matt Baker and
Liz Barker.
听
A memorial plaque and shrub will be placed to mark the
spot.
听
Matt Baker comments: "It is a real shock when
a favourite pet dies but it is something all pet owners have to face
and we hope that by having a share in our Blue Peter pets, children
can be helped to deal with that sad fact."
Viewers will be shown a special highlights package covering key moments
from George's Blue Peter years which will include the drama of his mysterious
(and temporary) disappearance from his garden in 1988; the time he turned
actor to play court tortoise to King Ludwig of Bavaria; and the memorable
day when he forgot his manners and weed on sportsman and presenter Kriss
Akabusi.
George made his last appearance on 14 April 2004, the day the new name
for George's girlfriend, was announced.
听
Shelley is the fifth tortoise in Blue Peter's 45 year
history and will miss George immensely.
