Radio Sheffield has teamed up with NHS organisations, the British Red Cross and Business in the Community to launch a new campaign throughout the summer to help save hospitals hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The Take It Back campaign will urge people to return valuable medical equipment to NHS hospitals and equipment loan centres around the region which is borrowed by many patients every year but never returned.

Andy Kershaw, from 大象传媒 Radio Sheffield, says: "The loss of this equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, crutches, commodes, mobility aids and bathing equipment is costing NHS hospitals a great deal of money.

"If it's never returned they have to buy it all over again, thus wasting funds which could be better spent on caring for patients."

All the NHS hospitals in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Chesterfield are supporting the campaign along with the Red Cross which has one of the country's biggest medical equipment loan centres at Manvers, near Rotherham.

Business in the Community's South Yorkshire Cares Unit is also lending support to the campaign.

People can telephone a special Take it Back hotline on 0114 267 5444 during the summer and special arrangements have been made to ensure that the medical equipment is collected throughout South Yorkshire and the North Midlands.

The campaign will last for five weeks, starting in Chesterfield today (Monday 7 June) and people are asked to call the hotline to request the collection of equipment if they are unable to return it themselves.
