Matt Dawson joins A Question of Sport

England rugby union player Matt Dawson replaces Frankie Dettori as the new team captain on A Question of Sport for its 35th year.

Matt will be fulfilling one of his biggest childhood dreams when he lines up against fellow-captain Ally McCoist and presenter Sue Barker for the new series which starts on 大象传媒 ONE on 17 September 2004.

Matt was a key member of the England team which won the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup and with 65 caps he is the most capped England scrum half ever.

He has also twice toured with the British Lions and has recently signed for Wasps.

Away from rugby he is an accomplished golfer and in his younger days he played wicket keeper for Buckinghamshire at school level and attended trials with Chelsea boys.

Frankie Dettori, after nearly 50 appearances as team captain, has left the programme to concentrate on his racing career but - having enjoyed his time on the show immensely - hopes to return as a guest.

Matt becomes the programme's 13th regular team captain since 1970, following in the footsteps of sporting legends Cliff Morgan, Henry Cooper, Fred Trueman, Brendan Foster, Gareth Edwards, Willie Carson, Emlyn Hughes, Bill Beaumont, Ian Botham, John Parrott and Ally McCoist.

Matt is delighted to be taking on the challenge: "It was my childhood dream to be on A Question of Sport, so I was absolutely blown away when I was asked to captain the team.

"When I was a child, we used to all sit at home and play the game as a family, so it's a real honour to achieve my dream.

"It's a milestone in my career, along with winning the World Cup!"

Wayne Garvie, Head of 大象传媒 Entertainment Group, looks forward to some exciting contests between the two captains.

"A Question of Sport has been extraordinarily lucky with the quality of its captains over the years," he says.

"Now we can say we have a World Cup winner on the team 聳 which is certainly one up on that McCoist chap!

"Matt has proved a big favourite as a guest and I'm sure he'll be even more popular as team captain.

"We wish Frankie lots of luck with his career and are looking forward to him returning regularly as a guest."

A Question of Sport is produced by Gareth Edwards, the series producer is Carl Doran and the executive producer is Caroline Roberts.
