Blue Peter presenter Simon Thomas with the new kitten

Blue Peter unveils new feline friend

Blue Peter welcomed a new kitten to the programme today, following the retirement of pet favourites Kari and Oke.

In time honoured Blue Peter tradition the new kitten 聳 the programme's seventh 聳 will be named by viewers.

Children can send in their suggestions for a name for the kitten and the winning entry will be revealed on air on 27 September.

Speaking about how the latest member of the team was found, Blue Peter Editor Richard Marson said: "A couple of weeks ago, we made a film about rescue cats and with so many unwanted cats and kittens in the UK we decided that Kari and Oke's replacement should be a rescue kitten too.

"As luck would have it, Marina Cragg, who looks after Kari, Oke and Shelley the tortoise, had been temporarily housing an unwanted stray cat called Topsy who had just given birth to five kittens.

"Homes had been found for four of these kittens and when we saw the fifth, we decided Blue Peter should offer him a home."

Presenter Liz Barker said: "I'm so excited. I have two cats myself and I'm really looking forward to welcoming our new kitten on board!"

Notes to Editors

The new kitten is the seventh Blue Peter kitten and will join the current pet line-up of dogs Mabel, Lucy and Meg and Shelley the tortoise.

Kari and Oke had their 13th birthday yesterday and have been with Blue Peter since 1991.
