大象传媒 World Service Trust series wins Best Radio Drama and Script in NBC Awards



A radio drama听series听written, set听and recorded in Nigeria听has won two prestigious awards.


Story Story, Voices from the Market听triumphed in two categories - Best Radio Drama and Best Script for a Radio Drama - at the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Awards at Africast in Abuja, Nigeria last week.


Set in and around a fictional West African market,听Story Story tackles some big issues - corruption, poverty, ethnic tension and civil unrest - in an authentic, dramatically engaging way.


It is broadcast by radio stations throughout Nigeria and on 大象传媒 World Service, reaching an estimated audience of more than 20 million twice a week. 听


The series is part of听大象传媒 World Service Trust's Voices project funded by the UK's Department for International Development.


The project also spearheads a major initiative, working with universities and state and commercial radio broadcasters to provide radio-skills training.


Part of the project involves the production of discussion programmes following up themes raised by Story, Story.


大象传媒 World Service Trust Director Stephen King said: "Story, Story has been immensely successful in harnessing the reach of radio with the power of dramatic narrative.


"From the very first episode, the series has provided quality educational broadcasting, engaging its audiences with authentic, gripping storylines that have relevance to their own lives.


"To win two awards is a tremendous result."

Africast is a biennial gathering of national and international broadcasters, broadcast executives, equipment manufacturers and other stakeholders in the broadcast industry.


The theme of this year's event, held in October in Abuja, Nigeria, was 'broadcast technology and democracy in Africa'.


The theme of this year's awards was 'programme content as a catalyst for development'.


Other entries in the radio drama category included Curtain Up, from the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation, and Cultural Dilemma, from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.


The winning entry was produced and directed by Akim Mogaji, Head of Production, Voices project.

The Trust currently works in more than 20 countries tackling health, education and good governance.
