One of 大象传媒 Wales' digital stories, made as part of its Capture Wales project, is set to star in the Commonwealth Film Festival next week.

Mangoes in A Cold Climate, created by Fijian Vimal Madhavan, is one of four short films featured in the Songs of Exile section of the Festival, running until 8 May in Manchester.

Madhavan, of Cefn Hengoed, created his story at one of several workshops 大象传媒 Wales runs as part of a project to give the public access to storytelling through a variety of media.

Participants bring along photographs and other possessions and use animation, digital editing and other techniques to tell their own stories.

So far more than 200 people have created their own short films, which can be seen on the Capture Wales website and which have also featured on the digital TV zone 大象传媒 2W.

"The stories have ranged from the hilarious to the sombre, from the impish to solemn," says Madhavan.

"What they have in common is that they have given a voice to people who sometimes have needed to be convinced that their tale is worth telling."

His own feature recalls his memories of his homeland, Fiji, detailing how he fled the country after a coup which made life very difficult for journalists.

He talks of his exile in Wales and of his emotions when he couldn't return to his birthplace, even when his mother died.

Mangoes in a Cold Climate is up for the audience award at the festival, with judging on Tuesday 3 May.
