Seven new weekly music programmes take to 大象传媒 Radio
Scotland's airwaves for the summer - offering a change in the
evening schedule, and our usual presenters and their usual shows a summer
break.
听
These are as follows:
听
Asian Overground
听
From 11 June 11 until 9 July, on Saturdays from 6.00 to
7.00pm, Asian Overground marks the first and most radical series in
a string of new listening for the summer.
听
It is presented by two new voices to the station, Rupa
Dilber and Manjot Sumal. They are both regular
presenters on Scotland's only full-time Asian station - Glasgow's Radio
Awaz FM.
听
Together, they offer a new twist on the classic boy-girl
team, with Manjot doing his best to curb Rupa's huge enthusiasm.
听
By day, Rupa is an employment lawyer and Manjot is a
former student who has also presented on SubCity FM.
听
In the last five years, Asian music in Scotland has
developed into a diverse and exciting mix of traditional and western
sounds. From Bhangra to hiphop flavoured reworkings of traditional songs
and all points in between, Asian club DJs are breaking moulds throughout
Scotland and permeating mainstream Scottish musical culture with a mix
of fresh styles.
听
Asian Overground will deliver this exciting mix in a
five-part series of fast-moving programmes designed to appeal to Asian
listeners - and crucially to everyone in Scotland interested in good
music.
听
Vic & Bryan's Big
Scottish Adventure

followed by Inverness, Aberdeen, Tay Square in Dundee and Edinburgh
on 22 August.
听
Vic and Bryan will be asking locals for insider knowledge
on where to hear the best music, eat the best food and what the must-do
tourist activities are in the area.
听
With plenty of surprise local personalities and celebrity
buskers in the 'live awning', the tour wouldn't be complete without
a guide to dodging the Scottish midgie!
听
Listeners can let Vic and Bryan know the hidden gems
in their area by e-mailing bigadventure@bbc.co.uk.
听

Earle, while subsequent shows will include blues, soul, rock, indie,

a passionate advocate for jazz songs and singers and has endeared herself
to several generations of jazz singers with her irrepressible sense
of fun and larger-than-life personality.
听
In these four programmes, Fionna Duncan talks 'singer
to singer' with artists from across the entire spectrum of jazz who
are working in the UK today, about what makes a song great in their
eyes.
听
Guests include the diva of improvisation, Norma Winstone,
and cabaret jazz singer Barb Jungr.
听
The Radio Thrift Shop
听
From 12 August until 2 September, on Fridays from 8.05
to 10.00pm.
听
Laura Cantrell presents the cult American
country programme, specially produced for listeners in Scotland. The
Radio Thrift Shop will give Radio Scotland listeners an exclusive taste
of New York's country music world, and introduce a whole new world of
radio, featuring music on disc and in session.
听
Cantrell is a brilliant country singer and rising star
on both sides of the Atlantic. She is also one of country music's most
acclaimed cult broadcasters.
听
For three hours every week on WFMU (broadcasting to
New York City), she is the proprietor of The Radio Thrift Shop, a country
music show like no other - a brilliant mix of the best and most exciting
new country and the best and most obscure old records. It is cult listening
for music fans in New York.
听
According to the New York Times: "She has the sort of
east Tennessee accent that seems to keep your coffee warm. Her decidedly
uncatchy signature line - 'Well, there you have it folks' - has become
a lazy weekend mantra for her fans. And over the last six years, her
noon-to-3pm show, The Radio Thrift Shop on WFMU, the famously eclectic
New Jersey radio station, has made her one of the city's best-known
DJs among music lovers with a country-and-western bent."
听
Cantrell already has very strong links with Scotland,
having launched her recording career on the Glasgow label Spit & Polish;
having made frequent visits, she has built up a sizeable Scottish fanbase.
听
She also has a high media profile. A concert on her
last tour was filmed and broadcast on 大象传媒 FOUR, and she's been profiled
in depth on several occasions in the quality press.
听
Big fans include Elvis Costello (who invited her to
tour with him in America) and John Peel (for whom she recorded several
sessions).
听
Her profile will be raised higher by a new album, Humming
By The Flowered Vine, due out on 20 June. It's her first album following
a significant new record deal.
听
Guests will include some of the dynamic artists in New
York, whether in residence or passing through.
听
In addition, Laura has access to an incredible stock
of archive recordings, including transcripts of radio appearances dating
back over 50 years and featuring the most important figures in country
music.
听
Excerpts of these, many never heard before in the UK,
will weave seamlessly into the programmes.
