Monarch of the Glen
Alexander 'Sandy' Morton plays Golly

Monarch of the Glen - series seven

Starts this September on 大象传媒 ONE

Alexander 'Sandy' Morton plays Golly

As one of Monarch's much-loved original cast members, Sandy admits he'll have a lump in his throat as he watches the cameras pulling away from Glenbogle for the very last time at the end of this series.

"There will be tears, I have absolutely no doubt about that," reveals Sandy. "It's going to be a real heart-tugger for me. When the final credits roll I know I'll be incredibly sad because I've had a smashing experience on this show.

"I still can't believe we've been at it for seven years; it's such a long time, yet it seems to have gone by in the click of a finger," reflects Sandy.

"I am just glad the 大象传媒 care about the show so much and it's brilliant we've been given the chance to say goodbye to the characters, to the place and to each other, properly."

And it's not just Sandy who will be tearful this series - emotions are also running high for Golly. His partner Meg died in childbirth and he's been left to bring up baby Cameron on his own. Fatherhood's never been Golly's strong point and much as he loves his son, he begins to wonder if he's cut out for the job and if Cameron would be better off away from him.

"He's getting by, but it's a struggle and if Jess wasn't there it would be a lot worse," explains Sandy.

"Meg's sister Rosie (played by Jackie Morrison) has offered to look after Cameron for him and part of him thinks that might be the best option if it means Cameron has a better upbringing.

"But, as Jess says when Golly threatens to do it: 'So you're going to that again are you? You're going to walk out on him the way you walked out on me?'

"This is a storyline that's very close to home for me because I have a daughter from my first marriage and a son from my second - and I wasn't around when my daughter was a baby. It was a very difficult time and although we have a great relationship now, I can understand what he's going through."

Golly is in a completely different situation this series - one which is alien to him. Rather than being the independent loner we've all come to know and love, suddenly he's in a position where he needs to let his guard down and turn to his family and friends - in particular Molly - for help.

"Golly is a proud man who doesn't like asking for help even when he needs it. In the end it's Molly who makes him realise that he's not on his own and that other people do care about him," says Sandy, who has also filmed a lead role in a feature length period drama called Manhunter: The Wolves Of Gysinge, to be shown on 大象传媒 TWO later this year.

While Sandy won't reveal whether there'll be a happy ending for Golly and Molly this series, the popular actor has been enjoying some wedding bells of his own.

"I've just got married for the third time - and the last," he says, grinning.

"I met Jane just before Monarch started. I was down in London doing a telly thing and she was my landlady. It's like some old theatrical joke or something isn't it - shacking up with your landlady? But she's a lovely woman and now I'm looking forward to being able to spend more time at home with her..."

So will Sandy be taking any souvenirs from the Monarch set back to his home in West London? "I've got my eye on the hat and the kilt. The hat has been in the show right from the very beginning - it's almost as famous as Golly is."
