Increased licence fee will benefit audiences in Scotland

大象传媒 Scotland Controller Ken MacQuarrie says viewers and listeners in Scotland would benefit significantly from the licence fee settlement proposed today by the 大象传媒.

Commenting on the 大象传媒's case for an increase based on RPI plus 2.3 per cent a year from 2007, Mr MacQuarrie said it was important for 大象传媒 Scotland to be in a position to deliver the best possible programmes and content.

"Moving to digital switchover is a tremendously exciting time for broadcasters in Scotland and for 大象传媒 Scotland in particular.

"In 2007 we move to a new digital headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow, while the Out of London initiative will bring huge Network opportunities for our programme makers in the years ahead.

"We are also looking at plans for expanded regional news services, which we hope to be able to offer to audiences around Scotland, and at how we might be able to support a Gaelic digital service.

"Increasingly, audiences are demanding new ways to consume our programmes, via the web, on broadband and on-demand. It will be incumbent on us, as a public service broadcaster, to find ways to deliver the best content to them in the most cost-effective ways we can devise.

"The plans for the licence fee settlement which the 大象传媒 has today outlined will allow us to ensure that our vision can be turned into reality," said Mr MacQuarrie.

The 大象传媒's National Governor for Scotland, Jeremy Peat, says he expects 大象传媒 Scotland to offer a range of cutting-edge services in the years ahead.

"The Board of Governors has examined the 大象传媒's plans and financial projections and believes them to be as robust as is feasible at this stage.

"The plans provide a vision for the future that is based on three things: consistent feedback from audiences who tell us what they want and expect from the 大象传媒; the increasingly important influence of new and emerging technologies on the broadcast market; and the necessity to align audience needs and digital developments in a cost-effective manner.

"In particular, I believe that the case which the 大象传媒 sets out for the licence fee settlement, allied to work under way to construct a new headquarters at Pacific Quay, opens up a host of opportunities for 大象传媒 Scotland.

"Over the next few years I expect 大象传媒 Scotland to offer licence payers a range of cutting edge services, innovative programming and, most importantly, very real value for their money," said Mr Peat.
