大象传媒 1Xtra and the 大象传媒 Asian Network have announced their first joint Homegrown Weekend, running from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 November.

Homegrown Weekend 2005 is a celebration of UK music, showcasing the best talent from the UK black music and Brit Asian scenes, and recognising 1Xtra and the Asian Network's part in supporting new music.

Fellow 大象传媒 digital networks 6 Music and 大象传媒 7 will also contribute to the weekend.

1Xtra's Ras Kwame and Asian Network's Nikki Bedi will launch the weekend at 7.00pm on Friday 11 November.

1Xtra will offer a non-stop 53-hour broadcast, while the Asian Network will dedicate 27 hours of programming leading up to and over the weekend, in a celebration of genres from hiphop, UKG, dancehall and drum & bass to desi and bhangra.

1Xtra's DJs Ras Kwame, Semtex, Rodney P & Skitz, Benji B, Nesha, Bailey, Dev, Cameo, Twin B, Panjabi Hit Squad, Robbo Ranx, Jenna G and Ronnie Herel team up with Asian Network's Nikki Bedi, Adil Ray, Anita Rani, Ameet Channa, Markie Mark, Dips Bhamra, DJ Stin, Neelu Khalsi and Bobby Friction to broadcast special Homegrown shows with live performances and interviews.

Both networks will broadcast the UK Anthems listener vote.

The most popular anthems will be broadcast on 1Xtra's UK Anthems (hosted by Ras Kwame and Twin B) on Sunday 13 November at 7.00pm and Asian Network's Top Ten Homegrown Anthems (hosted by Ameet Channa) on Saturday 12 November at 6.00pm.

Other highlights include:

1Xtra

The Greatest Show, hosted by Semtex, will feature UK MCs passing through.

In Conversation will be six music shows, each hosted by 1Xtra DJs with UK stars Shy FX, Klashnekoff, Wiley, Asher D, Craig David and Floetry.

1Xtra Live comes from four cities across two hours, with 1Xtra DJs and local unsigned talent: drum & bass in Belfast, hiphop in Glasgow, garage in Cardiff and desi in Leicester.

Soul II Soul's Jazzie B hosts The Basement, to dig through the crate for his biggest UK tunes.

Homegrown Discussions, hosted by Ras Kwame, will be a live debate with music industry figures to follow up on 2004's live debate.

Asian Network

Markie Mark will host a live session with Safri.

Desi Decades, hosted by Dips Bhamra, follows the history of bhangra, from traditional to the current fusion era.

Bobby Friction hosts a live set with bhangra act Achanak, while Markie Mark speaks exclusively to Panjabi MC.

The Mix will see a DJ battle between DJ Stin, Ameet Chana, Markie Mark and Bobby Friction for title of 'best turntablist'.

Willber Willberforce, 1Xtra Programmes Editor, said: "1Xtra is committed to playing the best UK black music and we are delighted that the Homegrown Weekend has become a regular fixture, to the extent that we can now collaborate with Asian Network.

"Homegrown Weekend will be our annual get-together where for once we pat ourselves on the back. And why not? The UK has amazing talent in the past and most definitely in the present.

"Our hope is that one day all platforms on the 大象传媒 join in the celebrations."

Vijay Sharma, Head of Asian Network, added: "We at the Asian Network are delighted to be involved in this collaboration with 1Xtra. This is a great way of celebrating homegrown talent from each of the different communities.

"It is a fantastic opportunity to shout about the massive contribution of Brit Asian talent, championed by the Asian Network".

Notes to Editors

Homegrown Weekend was originated by 1Xtra at the station's launch in 2002. The event is now in its fourth year at 1Xtra and will be the launch year at Asian Network.

Homegrown Weekend is inspired by 1Xtra's 100% Homegrown, hosted by Ras Kwame (Sundays, 5.00 to 7.00pm). The show has a highly-acclaimed music policy of playing only UK talent.

The station has supported a wide spectrum of UK artists, from established acts like Dizzee Rascal and Estelle, to emerging talent such as Sway and Kano.

The Asian Network has supported Brit Asian artists such as Jay Sean, Raghav and Juggy D, who have all achieved chart and club success.

The station will host a four-date club tour through November, kicking off in the week leading up to Homegrown Weekend with a live broadcast in Glasgow on Monday 7 November at 10.00pm, hosted by Adil Ray.

6Music will preview the Homegrown Weekend on Steve Lamacq's Roundtable show, with 1Xtra's Twin B, Asian Network's DJ Stin and a UK artist, on Friday 11 November at 6.00pm.

大象传媒 7 will run six three-minute comedies on 1Xtra in the week leading up to Homegrown Weekend on Jenna G's show (Saturdays and Sundays from 9.00am to noon) and TXU (weekdays with G Money & Charlene White, 2.00 to 4.00pm).

1Xtra's Dev and Nesha will also appear on Big Toe Radio on Saturday 12 November to talk about Homegrown Weekend.
