The mystery of Bleak House deepens as Tulkinghorn is shot...
Tulkinghorn (Charles Dance) dramatically departs 大象传媒 ONE's compulsive drama Bleak
House tonight (Friday 2 December).
听
In a scene reminiscent of Dallas in the Eighties, Tulkinghorn is shot when a
mysterious figure confronts him in his office.
听
But he is not as lucky as JR, who survived his assassination attempt.
听
We don't find out who did it until next week, but these are the key suspects...
听
Lady Dedlock (Gillian Anderson);
Captain George (Hugo Speer);
Guppy (Burn Gorman);
Hortense, the maid (Lilo Baur);
Smallweed (Phil Davis).
听
Tulkinghorn has his judgement day along with most of the villains in Bleak House, and some of the good guys,
too.
听
The murder mystery is said to be one of the first in literature, paving the way
for the likes of Agatha Christie and PD James.
听
With Bleak House originally being told in monthly instalments, readers were
guessing "whodunit" for weeks before the real culprit was revealed.
听
"There's a murky figure - you never see who it is," says Dance, who recently made
his directorial debut with Ladies In Lavender, starring Dame Judi Dench and Maggie
Smith.
听
And did Tulkinghorn deserve what he got?
听
"Oh yes he did," he says, with a twinkle
in his eye.
听
It wasn't a surprise for Dance to play a character who comes to a sticky end.
听
"I've died in most things I've been in," he laughs. "I've been shot, I've hung
myself and I've exploded. I survived in The Jewel In The Crown though, but I've
died in quite a lot!"
听
The 'hanging' took place in another Charles Dickens adaptation - a TV version of The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby (2001) in
which Dance played Ralph Nickleby.

Bleak House, 大象传媒 ONE, Thursdays at 8.00pm and Fridays at 8.30pm, repeated on Sundays
