Governors to be questioned by licence payers in Belfast

大象传媒 Governors are continuing their roadshow of public meetings around the country, with their next event taking place in Belfast on Wednesday 29 March 2006.

The meetings are designed to give audiences across the UK the chance to question the Board and have their say on the programmes and services they pay for through their licence fee.

Over the past few months the Governors have met licence payers at public meetings in Glasgow and Cardiff and last summer around 150 members of the public attended the first Governors' Annual General Meeting in London.

At each of the events the topics discussed have ranged from programme quality, impartiality to digital access and getting value for money from the licence fee.

The roadshow of public meetings is one of a number of initiatives introduced by the Governors over the past year to improve transparency and accountability at the 大象传媒, and ultimately strengthen the Board's relationship with licence fee payers.

Others include a dedicated website, which is being used for direct engagement with audiences through a Have Your Say feature; public consultations; radio phone-ins; and publication of Governors' meeting minutes in full.

The annual objectives set by Governors for management at the start of the current financial year were informed, for the first time, by audience research about the issues licence fee payers wanted to be addressed.

The National Broadcasting Councils and English National Forum - made up of members of the public - also play an important role in giving licence payers a voice.

In 2004/5 the Broadcasting Council hosted 22 public meetings at venues across Northern Ireland.

Its discussions with licence payers dealt with a range of issues including programming for young people, coverage of disability issues, cultural diversity and Charter Review.

Members of the public interested in attending the event in Belfast can apply online at www.bbcgovernors.co.uk or via a freephone number: 0800 068 0116, Textphone: 0800 015 3350.

The meeting will also be streamed live over the Governors' website, and a summary of key themes and issues will be posted there after the event.
