On Thursday 4 May, 23 million voters across England decide who is going to represent them in local councils for the next four years.

In Election Night (Thursday 4 May, 大象传媒 ONE and 大象传媒 News 24, 11.30pm-6.00am) David Dimbleby leads the 大象传媒 team reporting live as the results come in with instant reaction from the winners and losers.

Emily Maitlis reports from the biggest battleground of the night - in London - and there will be a complete picture of the story across the country at 12.15am and 1.30am.

It's a crucial night for Tony Blair and for the new party leaders David Cameron and Menzies Campbell as they face their first electoral test.

Jeremy Vine makes his debut as the master of virtual reality graphics - pulling together what is happening and what it means for the country as a whole.

The 大象传媒's Political Editor Nick Robinson will be on hand to tell us what the politicians are saying and planning behind the scenes.

The English Regions of the 大象传媒 will play a crucial role in the coverage.

There will be 24 outside broadcast facilities on the night, featuring 120 cameras across the country.

The 12 regional political editors will anchor coverage at key counts for Election Night on 大象传媒 ONE, and the 6.30pm regional news programmes will provide extensive coverage on 4 May.

The regional teams are also working closely with 大象传媒 News 24 and will present reports on key issues including: Health in the West Midlands where 2,700 NHS job losses have been announced; the BNP vote in the North West, Leeds and the West Midlands; the effects of manufacturing job losses in the East Midlands; and the 'Green' effect in Tunbridge and Plymouth.

News 24's Chris Eakin has taken to the road on his motorbike to profile Manchester and Winchester in advance of the polling.

大象传媒 Radio 4's Election Night 2006 will feature James Naughtie and Caroline Quinn bringing the results as councils go to the polls.

From when the polls close to when the final results are declared, 大象传媒 Radio Five Live and its team of presenters and reporters at key counts offer comprehensive coverage and analysis of the local elections.

From 10.00pm, Anita Anand reports the early trends and the shock gains and losses.

From 1.00am, Dotun Adebayo and the Up All Night team are on hand as the big political stories start to take shape.

And Five Live's Chief Political Correspondent John Pienaar is there throughout with big name interviews and his expert assessment of what the results might mean for the leaders, their parties and the country.

bbc.co.uk/election2006 will feature information on the latest political developments and campaigns. And from Monday 24 April, videos of all of the party political broadcasts will be also be available online.

On the site, readers can zoom in on their local area using the Election 2006 interactive map which holds data on all 177 councils taking part in elections this year. The map will be updated with live voting results on 4 May.

The site also offers an explanation of how voting works and why local elections are significant.
