大象传媒 Films' Red Road and Fast Food Nation selected for Cannes competition

For the first time, two films backed by 大象传媒 Films will screen in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in May.

Oscar-winning British filmmaker Andrea Arnold (Wasp) makes her feature debut with Red Road, a UK Film Council, Scottish Screen, Glasgow Film Office and 大象传媒 Films in association with Zoma Films, and Verve Pictures presentation of a Sigma /Zentropa Entertainments5 Production.

Written and directed by Arnold, Red Road stars Kate Dickie, Tony Curran, Martin Compston and Natalie Press in the story of a CCTV operator, Jackie, who watches over her small part of the world, an anonymous protector of its inhabitants.

One day Jackie recognises a man on her monitor whom she had hoped never to see again. Unable to turn away, and in pursuit of resolution, she feels compelled to track him down.

Red Road is produced by Carrie Comerford; Executive Producers are Gillian Berrie, Sisse Graum Jorgensen, Paul Trijbits, Claire Chapman, Lenny Crooks and David M Thompson.

Verve Pictures will release the film in the UK in October.

Renowned American director Richard Linklater joins forces with British producer Jeremy Thomas for Fast Food Nation, starring Catalina Sandino Moreno, Greg Kinnear, Ethan Hawke, Kris Kristofferson, Patricia Arquette and Avril Lavigne.

The screenplay is by Eric Schlosser and Richard Linklater. Fast Food Nation is a Jeremy Thomas presentation in association with Hanway Films, Participant Productions and 大象传媒 Films of a Recorded Picture Company production.

The producers are Jeremy Thomas and Malcolm McLaren with Executive Producers Jeff Skoll, Ricky Strauss, Chris Salvaterra, Ed Saxon, Peter Watson, Eric Schlosser and David M Thompson.

'The Big One' is the latest burger from fast-food chain Mickey's and it's turning out to be their most successful product yet.

However, there's something strange in the meat - so company man Don is sent down to Cody, Colorado to investigate the local meat packing plant where 'The Big Ones' for America are made.

Meanwhile, Amber, a local teenage girl who works behind the counter of the local Mickey's outlet, is scared to death because there have been a series of mysterious robberies at the other fast food restaurants in the area.

But when she discovers the whole truth about fast food chains like Mickey's, Amber and her friends come up with their own radical plan to stop America becoming a Fast Food Nation.

David M Thompson, Head of 大象传媒 Films, said: "This is the first time we've had two films in the main competition at Cannes and we're obviously delighted.

"This is a testament to our films' continued impact on the international stage. Cannes is a particularly competitive festival, with literally thousands of films vying for a place, so it's a special honour.

"Particularly pleasing is the fact that these two films represent so well our aim both to champion new talent and to invest in established names.

"Richard Linklater is a remarkable film maker, with an amazing range and this film is about a very important international subject.

"And we're thrilled that Andrea Arnold, a first time British feature director, should be honoured in this way. It is unusual for a first film to be selected for competition. Her film is one of the most striking debuts I've ever seen."
