Spitfire beats Bagpuss and the Bouncing Bomb to top the polls in The People's Museum
A Test Supermarine Spitfire uhas beaten hundreds of
popular artefacts including
Bagpuss and the Bouncing Bomb to be voted Britain's favourite museum piece.
听
The Spitfire, which is housed in the Think Tank Museum, Birmingham, was one of
almost 300 items selected from more than 70 museums across the country and
showcased in the 大象传媒 TWO programme The People's Museum.
听
Viewers were asked to vote for their favourite pieces - the top 20 were placed
in a virtual online museum at bbc.co.uk/history and presenter Paul Martin
announced today (Friday) that the overall winner was the most famous of all
World War II fighters, the Spitfire.
听
Paul Martin said: "We have seen literally hundreds of wonderful items over this
fabulous series, and heard some amazing stories - every one of which deserves
recognition.
听
"However I agree that the Spitfire is very special
because it's
thanks to this aeroplane - and the team behind it - that the RAF won one of our
greatest battles, the Battle of Britain." 听
Series producer Stephen Taylor Woodrow said: "This highly interactive,
regionally-focused project aimed to re-ignite interest in local museums and
galleries and give people a chance to find out more about treasures they are
unlikely to have seen or even heard of, even though they may be just down the
road.
听
"I hope we have succeeded in that aim and that people will visit the website and
go on to enjoy exploring the museums and finding out more about this country's
fascinating history."
听
The top five items chosen were:
- Spitfire (ThinkTank Museum Birmingham)
- The Suffragette Medal (Museum Of London)
- George Sluman's D Day Flag (Museum at Dockands)
- And
When Did you Last See Your Father? (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool)
- Lister's
Antiseptic Spray (Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow)
