Multi-talented Ceri takes up multi-platform challenge

大象传媒 Wales has appointed multi-talented theatre and opera director and film maker Ceri Sherlock as its first Commissioning Executive, Arts.

He joins from S4C where he was Commissioning Editor, Music.

He will executive produce 大象传媒 Wales's English language television arts output as well as helping to shape 大象传媒 Wales's future strategy for multi-platform arts coverage - encompassing television, radio and online.

大象传媒 Wales's English language arts coverage has grown to encompass more than 20 specialist television documentaries per year for the arts strand On Show as well as hours of coverage on both radio and television of events such as Cardiff's International Festival of Musical Theatre, Swansea's Proms in the Park, the Llangollen International Eisteddfod and the Faenol Festival in North Wales as well as 大象传媒 Cardiff Singer of the World.

Clare Hudson, 大象传媒 Wales Head of English Language Programmes, said: "We're really looking forward to having Ceri on the team.

"He'll bring his considerable experience in programme-making to bear on our output along with an enormous passion for the cultural and artistic life of Wales.

"Ceri already has a successful track record in multi-platform output which will be of great benefit to us."

Ceri Sherlock said: "I am joining 大象传媒 Wales at an exciting time in broadcasting.

"There are many exhilarating challenges on all broadcast platforms in the run up to television's digital switchover and I very much hope to be able to contribute significantly to creating arts content that is relevant, entertaining and stimulating.

"I am committed to the arts in Wales - from world class professional performances to the terrific work at community and grass roots level which is the seedbed for the future.

"The arts are Wales's golden assets and it will be a challenge to find the right way to showcase that work to a contemporary audience in the new multi-platform media world.

"I enjoyed immensely the challenge of being S4C's Commissioner for Music. It was a terrific portfolio and it underlined to me that Wales has musicians, composers and artists of world class stature."

Originally from Llanelli, Ceri Sherlock was educated at Ysgol Dewi Sant, Llandovery College, King's College, University of London and the University of California, Los Angeles.

He began his diverse career in the arts in the early Eighties, directing and working on operatic productions in venues from Ireland, Scotland and France to Germany, Belgium and Canada.

He returned to Wales to join Theatr Cymru as Associate Director and the Welsh National Opera as a staff producer, before an award-winning spell as Artistic Director of the Actors Touring Company in London.

His skills as a director - from classical Greek tragedy and major choral works to modern musical theatre - continue to be in demand.

In 1993 he moved into film, writing and directing Dafydd - which was broadcast on 大象传媒 TWO - followed a year later by the award-winning short film Fallen Sons.

His television drama for S4C, Branwen, was judged Best Film at the 1995 Celtic Film Festival and the feature film Cameleon won awards in the USA, Ireland and Germany.

Aside from the performing arts, Ceri has produced and directed a number of television documentaries and features - including the series Painting Flowers and The Private Life of a Masterpiece for 大象传媒 TWO.

He has held academic teaching positions in Wales and in Cambridge, and is currently a visiting professor at the University of Glamorgan.

He was also Expert Adviser on the arts to the National Assembly of Wales's review A Culture in Common before joining S4C.
