No-one tells a story like Jackanory

Brief history of Jackanory

Jackanory originally aired between 1965 and 1996.

The creator of the series was Joy Whitby, who developed the idea for a six-week trial run.

The series was so successful that it was commissioned to run every day, all year round.

Bernard Cribbins holds the record for the most appearances, notching up 111, while Kenneth Williams was another firm fixture with 69 episodes.

Former Jackanory storytellers include household names such as Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Peter Sellers, Alan Bennett, Joanna Lumley, Denholm Elliott, Arthur Lowe, Maggie Smith, Paul Merton and Spike Milligan.

There was also a memorable appearance from HRH Prince Charles, who read from his own book, The Old Man Of Lochnager.

One of the other famous faces from the series was writer and illustrator, Quentin Blake. He told his own stories about a creature called Lester and illustrated them on Jackanory.

Among the most unforgettable editions was Rik Mayall's reading of Roald Dahl's George鈥檚 Marvellous Medicine, in which a young boy attempts to kill off his horrible grandmother.

At the time it provoked complaints because of the naughty nature of the book and Mayall's anarchic storytelling. But it has since become enshrined in Jackanory history.

In total the 大象传媒 show ran for 3,500 episodes, in which time 650 stories were shared.
