Radio 1 and 1Xtra make new senior management appointments


Today the 大象传媒's Director, Radio & Music Jenny Abramsky and Controller Radio 1 and 1Xtra Andy Parfitt announced two senior management appointments at 大象传媒 Radio 1 and sister station 1Xtra.

Ben Cooper takes the new position of Head of Programmes, Radio 1 and Lorna Clarke becomes Head of Programmes, 1Xtra alongside her present role as Festival Director of the 大象传媒 Electric Proms where she will continue to report to the Director of Radio and Music.

Cooper - currently Head of Mainstream, Radio 1 - and Clarke will take responsibility for all output for Radio 1 and 1Xtra respectively and will report directly to Parfitt.

These posts have been put in place by Parfitt after being asked by 大象传媒 Director-General Mark Thompson to lead in strengthening the 大象传媒's offer for the younger teenage audience, alongside his responsibility as Radio 1 and 1Xtra Controller.

A third new management position also takes effect.

Ian Parkinson will take on the position of Head of Editorial Standards, Radio 1/1Xtra and Music Development Projects, Radio & Music interactive.

This is a combined role leading senior development work within Radio & Music interactive along with responsibility for ensuring exacting editorial standards across Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

Ian Parkinson will report both to Parfitt and Simon Nelson, Controller Radio And Music interactive.

Jenny Abramsky said: "Ben, Lorna and Ian are great talents.

"Ben and Lorna will give Radio 1 and 1Xtra the creative and innovative leadership the stations need to ensure they continue to thrive in the exciting, but challenging, digital radio world.

"Ian will now apply his expertise to Radio and Music Interactive, a brilliant asset for the department."

Andy Parfitt said: "Lorna, Ben and Ian are exceptional talents. Radio 1 and 1Xtra both need the best leadership possible and in Ben and Lorna I absolutely believe they will have it.

"Ian has an extraordinary range and depth of experience that will mean that we can continue to push boundaries to reach our young audience whilst maintaining the highest editorial standards.

"This restructure is essential to future proof both networks and ensure that the strategies for Radio 1 and 1Xtra are delivered effectively."

Simon Nelson said: "Ian's appointment means that we can strengthen yet more the Radio & Music Interactive offering. He brings with him a wealth of skill and experience and I'm very happy he has taken on this role."

Lorna Clarke said: "1Xtra is an amazing station playing and breaking music you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else and I'm thrilled to be taking on this role.

"I want to take the station to the next level and with the brilliant team of production staff and DJs 1Xtra has I'm certain that we can achieve this."

Ben Cooper said: "I'm very excited to have been given this job and the opportunity to continue to build on my work at Radio 1 in an even greater capacity.

"Radio 1 is in a very strong position at the moment with a fantastic team behind it and we've just put in place what I feel is our strongest ever specialist music schedule to complement our already powerful daytime line-up.

"The task of catching the attention of young listeners is getting even harder so I know I have challenging task ahead of me, one that I relish."

Ian Parkinson said: "I'm very much looking forward to taking on this totally new role which means I can help build on the brilliant work Radio & Music Interactive does and hopefully take this to even greater heights, as well as continuing to work with Radio 1 and 1Xtra to ensure editorial standards are always at their highest."
