Pop culture dominates Britain's Top Ten Living Icons as revealed by 大象传媒 Two's The Culture Show
|
The Culture Show announces the top ten greatest British Living Icons - as nominated entirely by the public - on 11 November on 大象传媒 Two at 7.10pm.
听
The list honours a diverse range of talent, including four music superstars - Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Kate Bush and Morrissey.
听
National treasures Alan Bennett and Sir David Attenborough make the top ten, as does tabloid favourite Kate Moss.
听
Stage, screen and the catwalk are represented by Stephen Fry, Sir Michael Caine and Dame Vivienne Westwood.
听
Although we live in a world obsessed with celebrity and headlines, the list suggests that the British public admires talent, intelligence and creativity.
听
More than 500 different Brits were suggested as icons, but the ten most popular have all made a unique contribution to British culture.
听
All ten have also earned their reputation over several decades - even the youngest name on the list, Kate Moss, began her career nearly 20 years ago.
听
Moss is one of only three women to make the male-dominated list. Her inclusion, alongside Dame Vivienne Westwood, reflects the status of British fashion within our culture.
听
The full list comprises (in alphabetical order):
听
Sir David Attenborough
Alan Bennett
David Bowie
Kate Bush
Sir Michael Caine
Stephen Fry
Sir Paul McCartney
Morrissey
Kate Moss
Dame Vivienne Westwood
听
"It's a striking list - no Queen, no Maggie, no JK Rowling. Best of all this is a totally open race. Any of the ten could win," says The Culture Show Producer, Edward Morgan.
听
Members of the public can vote for their favourite in the top ten by phone (09015 22 33 44), text (icon + surname of your icon to 83199) or online at bbc.co.uk/livingicons.
听
Voting closes on Monday 27 November 2006 at noon.
听
The top three contenders will be announced on the 2 December edition of The Culture Show, and portraits of these top three will be displayed in both the National Portrait Gallery in London and at the National Gallery in Edinburgh.
听
The overall winner will be announced on the final Culture Show before Christmas on 16 December.
