大象传媒 calls on Pakistan government for urgent help to locate missing journalist
|
The 大象传媒 today expressed "serious concern" over the sudden disappearance of one of
its reporters, Dilawar Khan Wazir, in Pakistan and called on the Pakistan government
to help locate the missing journalist.
听
Mr Khan, a Pakistani journalist who has been reporting for the 大象传媒
from听South听Waziristan,听went missing from Islamabad听on Monday听under what the 大象传媒
described as听"suspicious circumstances".
听
The 大象传媒 spokesperson said the organisation was seriously听concerned about the
whereabouts of听its reporter.
听
He confirmed that the 大象传媒 World Service Director Nigel
Chapman had written formally to the Pakistan Interior Ministry to request听urgent
help in tracing Dilawar Khan Wazir.
听
Nigel Chapman wrote: "I am听seriously听concerned about the whereabouts of our
reporter and would request your kind help in tracing him at the听earliest.听I would
be very grateful for your听support in this matter."
听
Dilawar was in the federal capital to visit his younger brother Zulfiqar Ali who is
a student at the Islamic University.
听
He was on his way back to听his hometown听Dera
Ismail Khan after seeing his brother. His family has not heard from him since then.
听
Accoring to Zulfiqar,听some plain clothes men came to the听hostel (of the
Islamic听University) and听told听his friends that Dilawar had met an accident and
insisted that Zulfiqar should come with them to the hospital.听
听
Dilawar's brother got
suspicious and did not accompany them.
听
When Zulfiqar called on Dilawar's mobile phone, the call was received听by someone
who identified himself as Dr Jamshed.
听
He reportedly asked Zulfiqar to rush to the
Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences听(PIMS): "Your brother met an accident听near
Peer Wadhai听and is seriously injured."
听
When the听大象传媒 checked with PIMS, the local police and other offices in the
capital听there was听no confirmation of any accident involving Dilawar Khan
Wazir.听
听
When the 大象传媒's Islamabad correspondent听visited the hospital in question
there was no trace of Dilawar and no member of the staff by the name of Dr Jamshed.
听
A 大象传媒 spokesperson听said:听"We are concerned for the safety of Dilawar Khan Wazir. We
are investigating this matter with some urgency and are in touch with Pakistani
authorities. We expect听them听to do their utmost in helping us trace our reporter."
