大象传媒 Scotland unveils tasty selection of seasonal fare

Hearty laughs, emotionally-charged drama, leading edge animation and rousing music are among the ingredients in the feast of entertainment that 大象传媒 Scotland will serve up over the festivities.

The Christmas and New Year schedules which were unveiled today highlight a variety of programmes to satisfy a wide range of tastes.

There are mixed tears of joy and sadness on River City this yuletide, when George (John Murtagh) prepares for what he knows will be his last Christmas.

An emotional gathering is in store for his family and loved ones, who are all oblivious to the fact that he is dying from a brain tumour.

But there's happier news for the Adams family when unexpected arrivals are sure to make this Christmas a very special one for Scarlett (Sally Howitt), Jimmy (Billy McElhaney) and Bob (Stephen Purdon).

The Watchnight Celebration on Christmas Eve comes from the atmospheric Rosslyn Chapel, now an international landmark thanks to the Da Vinci Code phenomenon.

Introduced by Richard Holloway, the celebration will feature well-known carols and readings from guests, including Hannah Gordon, in a candlelit atmosphere.

The entertainment on New Year's Eve begins in charming and pioneering fashion with Haunted Hogmanay.

This humorous animated comedy, which has been created with stop-frame technology, tells the story of amateur ghost-hunter Jeff Wylie who finds his New Year celebrations hijacked when dubious acquaintance, Thurston McCondroy, persuades him to seek out spooky spirits.

The festive special features the vocal talents of Alex Nortonas Thurston and Peter Capaldi as Jeff.

And Jonathan Watson is on-form again as he tackles the great and not-so-good of Scottish football in the nation's favourite festive send-up, Only An Excuse?

Gordon Strachan may have earned plenty of plaudits this season, but he still won't be spared a ribbing in the ever-popular Hogmanay hoot while newcomer Paul Le Guen can expect a warm welcome to Watson's world of football.

The laughter continues in the run-up to the bells with another memorable Still Game festive special. Jack (Ford Kiernan) and Victor (Greg Hemphill) find themselves holed up in the hoist of Osprey Heights as they make their way to a celebration at the bells.

Trapped in the lift, Winston (Paul Riley) recalls the daddy of all Hogmanays, in the dim and distant past when Craiglang knew how to throw a party.

Join Jackie Bird and a star-studded line up in the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle, right at the heart of the most famous Hogmanay party in the world.

Hogmanay Live will feature Scottish chart sensation Paolo Nutini, the Pet Shop Boys, Karine Polwart, and Hogamanay favourites Phil Cunnningham and Aly Bain.

The show will bring in the New Year in style with the crowds in Glasgow joining in to sing Auld Lang Syne in a unique Hogmanay link-up.

Among the festive treats on 大象传媒 Radio Scotland is a generous helping of laughter to banish those post-Christmas blues.

In the Day Of Scottish Comedy, on Wednesday 27 December, Armando Ianucci goes back to his comedic roots when he listens to some of the sketches he created whilst working for Radio Scotland.

They haven't been aired for 20 years, so Armando may display a fatherly pride in his youthful efforts - or he may be left cringing at the memory.

There's also a comedy debut in the form of The Clan which stars Richard Wilson, Ashley Jensen, Michelle Gomez and Sandy Nelson and follows the story of Jamie, a trainee fireman and mainlander, who finds himself shipwrecked on the island of Rhuck.

Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes at 大象传媒 Scotland, said: "大象传媒 Scotland has produced another excellent line-up of festive entertainment which we hope will delight our audiences.

"Each year we attract huge audiences for our festive output and hopefully the depth and range of programming will once again provide something for everyone."
