Hurt by Johnny Cash voted best cover in 6 Music poll

Johnny Cash's cover version of Hurt - originally by Nine Inch Nails - has been voted the best ever cover version, in a poll of ´óÏó´«Ã½ 6 Music listeners.

Cash's cover got over twice as many votes as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, The Clash and White Stripes – who also appear in the top 10.

The accolade for the worst cover ever goes to Madonna's version of American Pie by Don McLean. Madonna beat off competition from William Shatner, Rolf Harris, Ronan Keating and Steps.

Hurt was originally released on Cash's 2002 album, American IV: The Man Comes Around, recorded in the year before he died at the age of 71.

His recording was immortalised in an iconic video that won considerable acclaim and media attention and introduced Cash's music to a younger generation following his death.
