Growing band of listeners pushes Radio Scotland to eight-year high

Buoyant 大象传媒 Radio Scotland is celebrating its strongest set of listening figures for eight years.

The latest Rajar (Radio Joint Audience Research Ltd) report for the final quarter of 2006 shows the number of listeners attracted to the station has risen again - to 1,096,000 or 25.8% of the population.

That weekly reach total is up 157,000 from the previous quarter's figure of 939,000 (22.1%), strengthening Radio Scotland's position as the station that reaches the most listeners in Scotland.

Year-on-year the weekly reach rose from 1,017,000 (24.3%) as the audience continued to show its approval of the station's range of quality programming from comedy and music to current affairs, sport and the arts.

Radio Scotland figures are part of an outstanding overall performance for the 大象传媒 in Scotland.

The combined weekly reach of 大象传媒 stations listened to in Scotland was 2,525,000 (59.4%) - also the highest overall total since 1999.

Jeff Zycinski, Head of Radio at 大象传媒 Scotland, said the outstanding figures for the station were a testament to his talented team of programme makers and their response to the audience's wishes.

He said: "A success story like this doesn't happen by accident... it's all down to the creative enthusiasm of everyone at 大象传媒 Radio Scotland.

"We've asked our listeners what they want from the station and our programme teams have responded to that with so many new ideas and programme formats.

"We've had new voices on air and familiar voices doing new things. That spirit of innovation and imagination will continue throughout 2007.

"Our multi-platform celebration of Scotland's Music is just one example, but added to that are our plans for new comedy, drama and investigative documentaries.

"Our sport programmes continue to attract new listeners and I have no doubt our coverage of the Scottish election campaign - in programmes such as Good Morning Scotland and Scotland At Ten - will become a must-listen for anyone interested in politics.

"In an increasingly crowded and competitive market, 大象传媒 Radio Scotland aims to provide a diverse range of programmes and to reach audiences in every part of Scotland."

Among the programmes listeners enjoyed during the quarter were Freefalling, a comedy about a man's mid-life crisis, The Pain Of The Game, a series of revealing interviews with sporting legends, and Paper Tigers, which told the inside stories behind the landmark headlines of the newspaper industry.

Meanwhile Radio Scotland's own figures show a steady growth in online listening.

There were 362,000 requests across the whole quarter for live streaming of Radio Scotland - up on last quarter's 333,000.

The Iain Anderson Show received the most "listen again" requests from the station with 79,000 over the quarter followed by Travelling Folk with 47,000.
