The GIG winners

Young reporters get the GIG

After weeks of searching for the best young journalists in the country, 大象传媒 Wales's news programme for young people, Ffeil, has found the winners of its Gohebwyr i Gymru - GIG (Reporters for Wales) competition.

The successful five - Mali Fflur Griffith from Pwllheli, Llinos Evans from Dyserth, Ffion Jones from Dolanog, Steffan Griffin from Cowbridge and Catrin Mai Owen from Taliaris - were announced on the programme tonight (Friday 2 February).

From almost 300 entrants, 15 finalists were put through their journalistic paces in an X-Factor style interrogation by some of the best-known presenters in Welsh news, Ffeil presenter Owain Wyn Evans, Newyddion's Nest Williams and Garry Owen, presenter of both Newyddion and Post Cyntaf.

The judges then had the hard decision of choosing only five.

Owain Wyn Evans says: "It was quite a nerve-wracking experience for them and for us.

"We had a special set built with cameras and lights everywhere and they had six minutes each to answer all the questions we fired at them.

"I have to say that all of them coped fantastically and didn't seem nervous at all. All 15 really managed to impress us, there was such a variety of stories.

"I think we chose the right five though - they described the reports they'd like to make with great imagery, right down to how they saw every scene.

"I'll be watching out for my job!"

Steffan Griffin, 13, from Cowbridge, was full of excitement when talking about his success.

He said: "I'm very excited; I can't wait to get started on my report. I've already planned to do my first one on sea safety and then after that I'll be researching into another subject, possibly rugby.

"Coming back to the studios will be great. I have a strong interest in new technology and I'm really looking forward to learning how to use the equipment and seeing my finished report."

As winners they will now work with the Ffeil team to research, script and film their own report which will be broadcast on a future episode.

They will also learn how to use the same technology used by 大象传媒 Wales's reporters, including cameras and editing software.

Garry Owen said: "We were looking for people who were enthusiastic, creative and could think on their feet when presented with different situations.

"We had high expectations and we weren't disappointed. The final five have shown that they have some great ideas and the GIG competition will give them the chance to develop these along with some really valuable journalism skills."

Ffeil, Monday-Friday, 大象传媒 Wales on S4C, 4.50pm
