大象传媒's Komla Dumor launches competition in Ghana

Popular 大象传媒 presenter Komla Dumor is encouraging young Ghanaians to take part in an exciting new journalism competition called 大象传媒 NewsMaker.

Launching on Thursday 1 March 2007, the month-long competition aims to introduce younger audiences to the 大象传媒's English news programmes and will reward two winners with laptop computers and the chance to broadcast to 42 million people around the globe.

Komla launches the competition with a special debate programme at the British Council in Accra on Friday 2 March and will chair the panel of judges.

He says: "大象传媒 NewsMaker is our way of getting to the heart of the issues that matter to young people in Ghana. It will help us identify new, young talent and bring exclusive stories from Ghana to millions of English-speaking audiences on radio and online.

"I'm really excited to be involved. I know from experience young Ghanaians have a lot to say for themselves and I'm looking forward to judging their entries and hearing their stories on air."

Liliane Landor, Editor, 大象传媒 World Service News & Current Affairs, adds: "As Ghana celebrates 50 years of independence, we look to the future and tap into the talent and enthusiasm of the country's young people.

"I am confident 大象传媒 NewsMaker will deliver some thrilling stories for our programmes, informing and intriguing listeners around the world."

Ghana-based PR agency, Origin8 Saatchi & Saatchi, is helping the 大象传媒 handle logistics on the ground, including the distribution of 10,000 大象传媒 NewsMaker entry forms to key locations across Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi including the British Council libraries, Busy Internet cafes, universities, polytechnics and media outlets.

Open to non-professional journalists aged 20 to 30-years-old, the competition will also reward five runners-up with MP3 players.
