Father of missing 大象传媒 Gaza Correspondent makes heart-felt plea for his release

The father of the missing 大象传媒 Gaza Correspondent, Alan Johnston, today appealed for those holding his son to release him immediately.

Graham Johnston said:

"He was enjoying the job immensely, he had made friends with many Palestinians, although he did warn us that there was a possibility of being abducted, it went with the territory.

"This holding Alan is not doing the Palestinian people any favours, quite the opposite; it is no way to treat a friend of the Palestinian people, and all I can say to the men who are holding Alan: please let my son go, now, today."

"Just let him go. It is not helping the Palestinian people. It's no way to treat a friend of the Palestinian people, which Alan is. Let him go, now. Today."

The 大象传媒 issued the following statement at 7am UK time today, Monday 19 March 2007, about Alan Johnston, 大象传媒 Gaza Correspondent.

"It has now been a week since our colleague Alan Johnston left this building and headed for his apartment in Gaza City. Although we have not been able to establish exactly what has happened to Alan, it seems certain that he has been abducted and is being held somewhere in the Gaza Strip.

"As time passes, we are growing increasingly concerned about Alan's safety.

"Over the past week, we have worked intensively with the authorities in Gaza and elsewhere to try to locate Alan and we continue to receive assurances that everything possible is being done.

"However, it is disappointing that after seven days there has still been no firm word either about his whereabouts or his condition.

"We call on everyone with influence on this situation to redouble their efforts now that Alan has been missing for more than one week."
