This year's awards present an opportunity to reflect upon the term World Music.
Ìý
Twenty years ago, the movers and shakers behind promoting all forms of international music in the UK met and tried to think how best to group their musical discoveries. The aim was a term that would allow similarly curious listeners to walk into high street music shops and find what they were looking for.
Ìý
Twenty years on, and the question is not "did it work?", it did. Records were sold in their thousands (sometimes millions) that would not have been otherwise. The real questions concern what World Music means and the extent to which a useful label is really a genre.
Ìý
This year's list of nominees presents ample opportunity to engage in this debate.
Ìý
Radio 3 has played an integral role in raising the profile of world music and its Awards For World Music have become an important event in the calendar of the world music community.
Ìý
The station commits many hours each week to broadcasting a diverse range of music from the genre, incorporating cutting-edge, contemporary artists alongside some of the legendary players in programmes such as World Routes (Saturdays, 3pm), Late Junction (Monday to Thursday, 11.15pm) and Andy Kershaw (Mondays, 11.15pm).
Ìý
The poll winners' concert will be held at the Barbican, London on Sunday 27 May and broadcast live on Radio 3.

Notes to Editors
Ìý
The Radio 3 Awards For World Music are organised in partnership with WOMEX (World Music Expo), fRoots, Songlines, the Rough Guides and event producers Serious.
Ìý
The Awards compilation CD is produced by Union Square Music.
Ìý
The nominations for the Awards For World Music are chosen by the delegates of WOMEX. The 2,000 or so delegates at this annual event each have a vote in all of the Awards categories (except for the Album Of The Year and the Audience Award).
Ìý
In addition, music specialists at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ World Service choose one nomination in four of the five geographical categories. All of the nominations are then reviewed by the Awards For World Music jury (details of which can be found at bbc.co.uk/radio3) who choose the winning acts.
Ìý
There are two categories in which the jury has no say. The Album Of The Year is voted on by a panel of critics assembled by fRoots magazine. The Audience Award is chosen by the general public, who vote for their own choices from the overall nominations list. It is the one Award which is only revealed on the day of the Awards Poll Winners Concert.
