New talent boosts Asian Network's music credentials

Noreen Khan, formerly of Club Asia, will join the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network from next month as the station boosts its music offering, it was announced today.

Ìý

Khan takes the reins of the Asian Network Chart (Saturdays, 1-3pm) from 21 April 2007.

Ìý

Whilst hard-hitting journalism will still be a key feature for the station, music will be increasingly central to all of its daily programming.

Ìý

The Drive Show with Adil Ray will be extended to four hours daily (3-7pm), with an emphasis on playing the best in Asian music from across the UK and around the world.

Ìý

From 26 May 2007, a brand new two-hour Bhangra-orientated show will be at the core of Saturday evenings and future plans include the development of Bollywood programming and music.

Ìý

Noreen Khan, who made her name championing New British Asian music, said of her new appointment: "I'm very much into British-Asian music of all types – which is why I have always listened to Asian Network. I'm really looking forward to hosting the Asian Network Chart and to playing a whole host of great tracks."

Ìý

Mark Strippel, Head of Music, Asian Network, says: "I'm pleased to welcome Noreen Khan as part of the talented music line-up of the Asian Network.

Ìý

"Noreen has the potential to develop as a presenter right at the leading edge of what is one of the most important programmes on radio for British-Asian music. It is a huge platform."

Ìý

Last month, it was announced that Nihal will take the reins of the Asian Network phone-in (weekdays, 9am-noon) from 8 May 2007.

Ìý

Nihal has made his name championing Asian music and youth issues and is now the youngest Board member of the British Council as well as being a hard-working broadcaster on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Television, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 and the Asian Network.

Ìý

Bob Shennan, Asian Network Controller, says: "Our job is to attract and retain the best talent to provide the best possible service for our current and future listeners.

Ìý

"I am delighted that Noreen and Nihal are keen to broaden their careers with the Asian Network. It is a coup for the station. Our audience deserves and demands the best."
