U2 rocks the church

Lincoln will play host to England's first U2Charist, an adapted Holy Communion service which uses the songs of U2 in place of traditional hymns, thanks to 大象传媒 Local Radio.

The idea behind the Lincoln U2Charist came about when a producer at 大象传媒 Radio Lincolnshire, Sue Edwards, heard about the phenomenon and travelled to York Harbor, Maine in the United States to witness the worship.

She said: "I wanted to make it relevant to our audience, so I came up with the idea of hosting a U2Charist here in Lincoln.

"There is a depth to U2's lyrics. They've been around for three decades, so I think that's testament to how their lyrics connect with people all over the world."

The U2Charist will take place at St Swithin's Church in Lincoln on Saturday 26 May 2007.

A live band will perform U2 classics including I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Mysterious Ways and Peace On Earth.

The lyrics will appear on a large screen and worshippers will be encouraged to sing along.

Sue said: "It's not just about belting out Bono classics but a sharp reminder to help fellow human beings who find themselves struggling to survive on a daily basis."

The service will focus on the Millennium Development Goals to reduce world poverty. U2 frontman Bono is a global ambassador for the Millennium Development Goals which aim to eradicate dehumanising conditions by 2015.

The collection from the service will go to charities that are working to these ends.

The U2Charist at St Swithin's will be at 4.30pm on 26 May. Admission is free but capacity is limited.

To reserve seats people should call Radio Lincolnshire on 01522 821000.

The service will be broadcast on .

Notes to Editors

The Celebrant will be the Bishop of Grantham, the Rt Rev Timothy Ellis.

U2's songs will be performed live by the Lincoln New Life / Grapevine band which will be led by Howard Williams.

The sermon will be based around the Millennium Development Goals, delivered by Rev Paige Blair.
