The Money Programme finds Britain's greenest High Street retailer

The Co-op is the greenest retailer on the high street according to research for the Money Programme Special, How Green Is Your High Street? (Thursday 28 June, 9pm, 大象传媒 Two).

The supermarket chain Somerfield was ranked last of the ten high street stores assessed during the research. The Co-op beat Marks & Spencer (ranked 2nd), Tesco (3rd) and Boots (4th) into first place.

The survey was carried out for the programme by environmental research organisation Trucost, which calculated the carbon and waste emissions of ten of the biggest names on the high street based on the companies' own figures.

Researchers considered the carbon emissions, and the rubbish being dumped, rather than recycled, by retailers.

Trucost put a value on the waste the companies sent to rubbish dumps and the CO2 discharged into the atmosphere. Trucost then calculated the environmental cost of every million pounds turnover generated by the company.

According to the data, the Co-op released 拢324 worth of carbon and waste for every million pounds it turns over. Somerfield, by contrast released over three times that amount (拢1,194).

Full details for all ten companies are given below:

Carbon & Waste Performance Ranking Company Carbon & Waste Cost (拢)/拢 Sales
1 Co-op 324
2 Marks & Spencer Group PLC 455
3 Tesco PLC 635
4 Boots 645

Trucost is an environmental research organisation working with companies, investors and government agencies to understand the impact companies have on the environment.

The table uses the 2008 Futures carbon price as of 30 April 2007 (拢12.40 per tonne) and a cost for landfill waste, estimated by Trucost, of 拢20.50 per tonne.
