Panjabi Hit Squad and Jas Rao join Asian Network
Panjabi Hit Squad, arguably the most well known British-Asian music group of recent times, and Jas Rao, a rising star of radio, have been signed to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network.
Ìý
Panjabi Hit Squad (PHS), who start on the Asian Network this Saturday 5 August, broke onto the UK urban music scene in 2001, originally with four members, and helped create a new genre that fused Bhangra with Urban Street music – "Desi Beats".
Ìý
They have been regular deputisers for Mentor Kollective in the slot on Asian Network. Now operating as a two-piece whilst on the station, Rav and Dee of PHS will start their own show, Panjabi Hit Squad, every Saturday night from 5 to 8pm.
Ìý
The Squad were part of the original launch line-up of 1Xtra and in the years since have built a reputation for breaking home-grown British-Asian talent with their award winning show, taking the Best Specialist Radio Show at the Asian Music Awards in 2004 and 2005.
Ìý
In 2006, PHS produced Ladies First with MC Ms Scandalous which debuted at No.1 in the Asian music charts and discovered new signing Alyssia who has been tagged the Queen of Bollywood.
Ìý
Radio DJ Jas Rao, also known as "Jas the Man", will join Asian Network's new look DJ line-up on Monday 13 August.
Ìý
Jas has built his name in commercial radio over the past four years, most recently hosting the Breakfast Show on Club Asia.
Ìý
Jas's musical signature is Bollywood music, remixed with dance. Initially Jas will be deputising on Nihal's phone-in show and will also occasionally present the Love Bollywood show.
Ìý
On his love of Bollywood Jas says: "A lot of people find it odd because I'm Punjabi – and I love Bollywood, but I'm a bit of a romantic!"
Ìý
Jas said of his move: "I am absolutely excited and positive about my move to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network. This step will no doubt push my career in radio further and help to provide me with more skills, challenges and experiences in the future.
Ìý
"The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network has a lot to offer me and I believe I can add a new edge, energy and dimension to the network, I just can't wait to get stuck in!"
Ìý
Jas's signing is the latest in a series of contemporary British Asian musical appointments on Asian Network which are part of the development of the station's new British-Asian music offering.
Ìý
These include PHS as well as Bhangra remix DJ Sonny Ji, Asian Network Chart presenter Noreen and earlier this year Nihal, who hosts the phone-in show.
