´óÏó´«Ã½ coverage of the World Athletics Championships 2007


´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport will be providing extensive coverage of this year's World Athletics Championships from Osaka, Japan with a combination of live programmes and highlights across TV, radio and online.

Coverage begins on Friday 24 August 2007 and runs until Sunday 2 September.

Ìý

Sue Barker heads a strong ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV team of expert presenters, commentators and analysts which includes former Olympic champion and world record holder at 200m and 400m, Michael Johnson, as well as former World champions Colin Jackson, Steve Cram and Jonathan Edwards.

With Osaka in Japan eight hours ahead of the UK, more than 50 hours of coverage is planned across ´óÏó´«Ã½ One and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two.

Ìý

The daily pattern of coverage features live action in the early hours and again from late morning through to early afternoon. The daytime programme will be presented by Sue Barker with Colin Jackson, Michael Johnson and Denise Lewis (for the duration of the Heptathlon), with the overnight action being linked in by Phil Jones from Osaka.

Hazel Irvine then presents an early evening highlights package on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two, keeping viewers bang up-to-date with all the latest action as well as previewing all the key events and big stories coming up.

Ìý

Describing the action from Osaka is a team of expert commentators including Steve Cram, Jonathan Edwards, Paul Dickenson, Stuart Storey and Brendan Foster – all with a wealth of experience to convey. In addition Phil Jones will be on hand to carry out interviews with all of the big names.

The ´óÏó´«Ã½i service will complement the main TV programming with an extensive highlights and repeats package.

Ìý

From 6am viewers will be able to see highlights of the overnight action, at 5pm the premiere of the evening highlights with Hazel Irvine and at 7pm a complete repeat of the daytime programme. The repeat ensures that anyone who has been at work can catch up on any of the action they may have missed.

´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Five Live will bring all the latest news from Osaka and coverage of the major events, with regular live uninterrupted commentary on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Five Live Sports Extra.

Mike Costello heads the presenting team along with former world record holder, Olympic and World silver medallist and veteran of six world championships Steve Backley and 400m European and Commonwealth medal winner Allison Curbishley.

A special World Championship preview edition of Five Live Track & Field will broadcast in Five Live Sport from 7pm on Thursday 23 August, with top guest's including Olympic medal winning 400m runner Katherine Merry.

The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport website has a site dedicated to covering the World Athletics Championships at bbc.co.uk/athletics.

Aside from all of the latest news and features the site will bring a combination of live text as well as full interactive multi-screen and web streaming of the whole event.

In addition the site will carry video-on-demand (full details to be confirmed) and video masterclasses from a number of athletics stars from the UK and across the world including: Jade Johnson, Tim Benjamin, Marlon Devonish, Goldie Sayers, Phillips Idowu, Carolina Kluft, Asafa Powell.

Plus there will be regular columns and opinion pieces by some of the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s top athletics names such as Steve Cram and Colin Jackson.

´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport has covered the World Athletics Championships since they first began in Helsinki in 1983. This year's Championships in Japan is the climax to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport's summer athletics calendar which features an unrivalled portfolio of athletics from both home and abroad.
