Tributes to Tony Holland

Tony Holland, co-creator of 大象传媒 One's EastEnders, died in hospital last night aged 67. He had been unwell for some time.

As writer and scriptwriter Tony was responsible for the 大象传媒 dramas Z Cars, Angels and District Nurse.

Alan Yentob, 大象传媒 Creative Director, paid the following tribute to Tony: "It is very sad news about Tony Holland. Tony and Julia Smith together conceived and created EastEnders and that has to be a formable achievement.

"Tony was intimately involved in every aspect of the show for the first four years including the classic blockbuster Christmas episode featuring Dirty Den and Angie in 1986.

"The concept of the drama serial centred on a large extended family was their brainchild and much of the detail such as the creation of the Beale family and the focus on the Queen Vic pub came from Tony."

John Yorke, Controller of 大象传媒 Drama, said: "Tony's contribution to popular drama and 大象传媒 One is immeasurable.

"It's impossible to imagine the 大象传媒 without EastEnders and it will stand as the ultimate testament to his career."

Diederick Santer, Executive Producer, EastEnders, said: "We are all terribly sorry to hear that Tony has passed away.

"He was a true genius and all of us at EastEnders are forever indebted to him for creating the programme with the late Julia Smith.

"Tony will be remembered with great affection and respect by everyone at EastEnders.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to his partner, friends and family at this very sad time."
