Coal House: the Phillips family

Steph shares her good news with the Coal House families

Stephanie Phillips, the mum of six who took part on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Wales' hugely successful Coal House series, has announced that she is expecting a baby.

Ìý

Steph, 40, from Cowbridge, who is married to carpenter Richie, has been told that the couple's baby, their third child together, is due early in June next year.

Ìý

"I had a vague idea that I might be pregnant before I went into Coal House, but I wasn't sure so I thought I'd wait until we came out before telling Richie and the children," said Steph.

Ìý

She is mum to Jade (16), Ryan (14), Daniel (8), Rhodri (2) and Gwennan (1) and step-mum to Richie's daughter Katie (8).

Ìý

"I didn't want everyone fussing over me and I didn't want anyone worrying, because there wasn't any point in that – and then as time went on I sort of forgot about it," she says.

Ìý

"Although I didn't have any morning sickness, I was really tired during those early weeks of the pregnancy in Coal House, but I know that I would have been tired anyway."

Ìý

Steph was delighted to share her good news with the other Coal House families when they were reunited at Stack Square for the first time this week to film Coal House At Christmas.

Ìý

The Christmas special will be shown tonight (Friday 21 December) on ´óÏó´«Ã½ One Wales at 9pm and on Christmas Day on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two Wales and ´óÏó´«Ã½ 2W at 10.15am.

Ìý

For the one-off special, the three Coal House families – the Phillips, Griffiths and Cartwrights – gathered to sing carols around a Christmas tree at Stack Square.

Ìý

The programme will feature highlights from the series as well as previously unseen footage from the families' time living in 1927.

Ìý

"When we were filming for Coal House At Christmas, everyone had suggestions for a name – the children all said I ought to call the baby Scarlet in honour of one the Coal House chickens and Cerdin suggested that Cerdin would be a nice name," says Stephanie.

Ìý

Fans of the series will remember Stephanie's emotional adjustment to 1927 life, when the three families taking part had to live for four weeks cram-packed into tiny mining cottages in Stack Square, Blaenavon with no heating, electricity or running water.
