´óÏó´«Ã½ Four announces three-part series Jews
|
A new series from award-winning Lefties director Vanessa Engle is coming to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Four this spring. Jews offers a remarkable and unprecedented insight into Jewish life in Britain today.
Ìý
It looks at religion, orthodoxy and secularism, documenting the beliefs and culture of very different kinds of Jews – ranging from atheist and secular Jews through to ultra-orthodox Jews.
Ìý
The three-part series looks at family histories, belief systems and the meaning of what it is to be Jewish.
Ìý
Vanessa Engle says: "It tackles these big questions by telling three authored and specific stories about faith, identity and community."
Ìý
With extraordinary access to the Hasidic community in Stamford Hill, the first episode gives an exceptionally rare insight into ultra-orthodox Jewish life in a closed Jewish community in North London.
Ìý
Episode two looks at the psychological inheritance of the Holocaust. The Holocaust may have taken place over half a century ago, but the children of refugees and survivors find themselves carrying the inherited trauma from the past in their everyday lives.
Ìý
The final programme is set in the uncharted world of the Modern Orthodox Jewish community in Hendon in north-west London. The subject of the film is the 52-year-old millionaire philanthropist and aptly-named Jonathan Faith, former owner of high street chain Faith shoes.
Ìý
The 3 x 60-minute series has been commissioned by Janice Hadlow, Controller, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Four, and the Executive Producer is Anthony Wall.
Ìý
This is Vanessa Engle's fourth series for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Four. Her previous series were Britart, Art & The 60s and Lefties which won a Gold Plaque for Best Social/Political Documentary at the Hugo Awards at the Chicago International Film Festival.
