Radio Derby's charity handout
|
大象传媒 Radio Derby is handing out well over 拢20,000 raised during its 2007 Money Mountain Appeal to six local good causes this week.
听
Since its inception the appeal has contributed well over 拢1million to organisations and groups which help people across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire.
听
The 拢21,537 raised last year is being used to fund projects ranging from support for people with brain injuries to helping disadvantaged children have a holiday.
听
The centrepiece of the fundraising came last October when Radio Derby broadcast a Money Mountain auction, offering the lots donated by local businesses and individuals.
听
The coffers were also swelled with listeners and organisations setting up their own events. For example, the city branch of the Derby County supporters club held its own annual auction for the appeal raising nearly 拢1,500 and Birds sold special Money Mountain cakes raising another 拢1,000.
听
The biggest beneficiary of the money will be Headway Derby, which will receive 拢9,000 to help transform five neglected allotment plots in Derby and create a garden for people with brain injuries.
听
The cheques are being handed over during Aleena Naylor's mid-morning show (10am to 1pm) on Wednesday 27 February. The show reports live from some of the projects to see how the money is being spent.
听
Simon Cornes, Editor, Radio Derby, says: "There's something very special about the moment when we hand over the Money Mountain cheques. You get a real sense of the difference the money raised is going to make.
听
"We never take for granted the generosity of our listeners. They've dug deep and, once again, many people will benefit."
听
The organisations to benefit are:
听
- Derby Kids' Camp (receive 拢5,000)
Derby Kids' Camp provides free camping holidays in the Peak District during the summer holidays for 250 disadvantaged city children aged 8-11. The grant will help replace worn out sections of canvas on their large communal marquees. The camp would be unable to operate without the marquees.
- Belper & District Neighbourhood Watch Support Group (receive 拢2,000)
The group wants to encourage more children to walk to and from school and will use their grant to buy high visibility arm bands, bag straps and body jackets that can be distributed to schools and other groups in the area. The grant also funds carbon monoxide alarms for the elderly and disabled in the Belper area.
- Headway Derby (receive 拢9,000)
Headway Derby helps and supports people from Derbyshire and East Staffordshire who have been affected by brain injury. Their grant enables them to transform five neglected allotment plots in Derby to create a garden.
- Safe and Sound Derby (receive 拢2,500)
Safe and Sound Derby provides support and advice to young people who are being, or at risk of being, sexually exploited. The grant helps pay for a kitchen and other work to the premises they moved into last summer.
- Dove Valley Community Project (Thistley Place Meadow Nature Reserve) (receive 拢1,537)
This project was started by a group of householders in Hatton who bought a field and island adjacent to the River Dove in Hatton in 2006 to create a nature reserve with wildflower meadow that can be enjoyed by all the community. Their grant allows them to buy two wheelchair accessible picnic tables with benches for the reserve and a number of wildflower plants, bulbs and seeds.
- Derbyshire St John Ambulance Cycle Responder Unit (receive 拢1,500)
The Cycle Responder Unit was created in May 2006 and is the first of its kind for Derbyshire St John Ambulance. Their grant pays for a specially-created cycle and pannier that can carry oxygen and a defibrillator.
