Torchwood star gets set for the big fight night on Radio Wales
Eve Myles is known for fighting aliens as Gwen Cooper in ´óÏó´«Ã½ÌýTwo's Torchwood but on Saturday she reveals her love of the more down-to-earth sport of boxing on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Wales.
Ìý
Eve, who also stars in ´óÏó´«Ã½ Wales hit drama Belonging, hosts a special evening of programmes on Radio Wales in the run-up to the Joe Calzaghe v Bernard Hopkins Las Vegas Light Heavyweight title fight in Calzaghe Fight Night (Saturday 19ÌýApril, 6.30pm).
Ìý
Eve says her love of boxing comes from her family.
Ìý
"It's been passed down to me from my father and my brother who have been huge boxing fans," says Eve.
Ìý
"My brother's done a fair bit of boxing himself although nothing on a professional level.
Ìý
"But boxing has always been something in the family. Boxing has always been a big talking point and a big event in our house and I think Joe Calzaghe has really brought that to the forefront."
Ìý
Eve also admits to dabbling in the art of boxing herself: "I did a bit when I was young. I broke my knuckles and I did it no more! I wasn't hitting anybody by the way – it was a punch bag."
Ìý
Her role in Torchwood as Gwen Cooper involves a lot of action, so Eve is aware of the amount of effort that goes into any extreme physical pursuit.
Ìý
"It's a very physical programme and that's why I love doing Torchwood – you get to do all these outlandish things and be safe at the same time," says Eve.
Ìý
"You're not going to get hit, you're not going to get hurt, well hopefully – thankfully it hasn't happened yet."
Ìý
A big Calzaghe fan, Eve believes he stands a good chance against Hopkins on Saturday:
Ìý
"I think he's got every chance in the world. He's one of the strongest boxers we've ever sent out there and I think that with the support and love of Wales behind him he can do no wrong.
Ìý
"All he can do is his best, whatever happens on the night the outcome is that the Welsh will still be proud of him for going out there and representing us."
Ìý
Eve has just one message for Joe on the night: "Go get him boy!"
Ìý
In the special programme, Calzaghe Fight Night (6.30pm), Eve looks back at Joe's career and hears from celebrity fans including former Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones, who sparred with Joe in the ring for the popular ´óÏó´«Ã½ children's series.
Ìý
Also giving their views on Joe are two Welsh boxing legends: Swansea's Colin Jones, former British Commonwealth and European Welterweight champion, and the last Welshman to fight in Las Vegas; and Nicky Piper, former Commonwealth Light Heavyweight champion.
Ìý
The programme also features young boxers from across Wales who have been inspired by Joe and the former World Featherweight champions Barry McGuigan and Cardiff's Steve Robinson.
Ìý
Steffan Garrero talks to Joe, his family and friends looking back at the Welsh fighter's fantastic career so far in Undisputed – The Joe Calzaghe Story from 7.30pm.
Ìý
There's another chance to catch a special edition of I'll Show You Mine at 8.30pm with Frank Hennessy talking to Joe's father and trainer Enzo about his passion for music and his links with the popular Sixties/Seventies comedy pop group The Barron Knights. Plus there's a rare chance to hear a demo of a new song by Enzo and his brother Sergio – Summer Boy – which features Joe on backing vocals.
Ìý
From 10.30pm, John Lenny Junior takes fans into the small hours with more music, tributes to Joe and Kings Of The Ring – The History Of Welsh Boxing.
Ìý
Phil Steele will be live in Newbridge Rugby Club with Calzaghe fans to soak-up the atmosphere in Joe's home town ahead of the fight, plus a live link-up with Las Vegas.
Ìý
Mal Pope hosts from 2.30am with more build-up to the fight and Mal will hand over to Steffan Garrero in the early hours of Sunday morning for full blow-by-blow commentary on the Calzaghe v Hopkins fight live from Las Vegas.
Ìý
´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cymru will have exclusive Welsh language commentary on the fight in a special programme Bocsio: Calzaghe v Bernard from 2.30am.
Ìý
If you can't stay up for the big fight, Radio Wales will have a special programme on Sunday morning featuring extensive highlights of the bout in Boxing Highlights from 10.00am.
