Radio 2's Young Choristers Of The Year is announced

´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 has launched its search for 2008's Young Choristers Of The Year and is looking for applications from choirs or music groups.

The long-running competition is open to choir boys and girls aged between 11 and 16 and the final takes place at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Friday 31 October 2008.

The winners – a boy and a girl – receive a trophy and advice from some of the country's finest voice coaches as well as the opportunity to hear their winning performances on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 when the competition is broadcast on Sunday 2 November 2008.

Winners have gone on to enjoy professional singing careers and have appeared on national television and radio.
Ìý
Most recently, Laura Wright (2005's Choir Girl of the Year) has enjoyed chart success with the female classical group All Angels.

Andrew Carwood, Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral, says: "I'm delighted to be chairing the judges for this year's competition. It's a wonderful celebration of the contribution young voices make to church music in all its glory and variety.

"Many a professional singer has begun their musical career singing with their local church choir. Several winners of this competition over the years have gone on to star in West End shows or classical careers, but it's the distinctive sound of the voice of a choir boy or choir girl that makes this competition unique."

Entrants must be over 11 and under 17 years old on Friday 1 August 2008 and should be a treble, soprano or alto singing regularly in a choir or music group at services of worship of any denomination.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 31 July 2008.

A shortlist of preliminary finalists will be considered by a panel of judges in September, who will then select the four finalists for each section.
