Radio Derby signs ex-Rams star
|
´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Derby has signed up former Derby County star Gary Rowett as the new summariser for its coverage of Rams matches during the forthcoming 2008/2009 football season.
Ìý
Gary lines up alongside ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Derby's resident match commentator Ross Fletcher to bring fans all the thrills and spills of the Ram's attempts to bounce straight back to the Premier League, following relegation last season to the Championship.
Ìý
In addition to providing excellent analysis and expert opinion on Derby County's fortunes, Rams fans also have the chance to discuss the team's performances with Gary – by taking part in the post-match phone-in.
Ìý
He will also join Ross Fletcher in the hot-seat for some of the Monday night Sportscene Talk-in programmes.
Ìý
Already an experienced broadcaster, Gary has worked on both TV and radio since retiring as a professional footballer because of injury.
Ìý
Gary replaces his former Derby County team-mate Dean Sturridge as ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Derby's football summarizer. Sturridge has decided to concentrate on his coaching work.
Ìý
After joining Derby County in 1995, Gary was part of the successful Rams side that won promotion to the Premier League in the 1995/1996 season.
Ìý
His most memorable game was playing in the game that secured promotion to the top-flight, when the Rams beat Crystal Palace 2-1, after being 1-0 down.
Ìý
Gary, who still lives just outside Derby with his family, says of his appointment: "I'm really excited about commentating on the Rams' games this season.
Ìý
"I've got some great memories from my time at the club and this is the next best thing to actually being out there on the pitch."
Ìý
Gary Andrews, Assistant Editor, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Derby, says: "This season promises to be action-packed and it's great news for us that Gary has agreed to join our sport team reporting on Derby County home and away.
Ìý
"Alongside Ross, Gary's vast experience of playing in the top flight will give our listeners an entertaining and exciting insight into the action on the pitch.
Ìý
"The fact that he has been part of a successful Rams side and has proven abilities as an articulate broadcaster is a real bonus."
Ìý
Gary began his professional football career with Cambridge United and joined Derby County when he was signed by former manager Jim Smith for £300,000.
Ìý
He played alongside other Rams stars including: Stimac; Poom; Baiano; Eranio; Wanchope and Sturridge.
Ìý
He left Derby County to sign for Birmingham City for £1 million in the summer of 1998.
Ìý
During his career, Gary has also played for Everton, Leicester City and Charlton Athletic.
