Sue Perkins wins the battle of the baton



Last night's grand final of Maestro live on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two saw Sue Perkins triumph in the public vote and win the right to take to the stage at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Proms In The Park on Saturday to conduct the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra and soloist Lesley Garrett in front of an audience of 30,000 happy revellers.

The once-in-a-lifetime chance to conduct the orchestra at the event in Hyde Park, London will be broadcast live on ´óÏó´«Ã½ÌýTwo and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 as part of the Last Night Of The Proms celebrations.

Immediately after winning, Sue Perkins said: "Winning has been an extraordinary and exhilarating experience, so thank you."

Ìý

Over the course of a tense and dramatic evening, Sue Perkins performed alongside fellow finalists, Goldie and Jane Asher, who had all set out to prove to the public that they had what it takes to direct a world class orchestra.

Ìý

But in the end there could only be one Maestro and Sue Perkins took to the podium one final time before performing in front of a live audience of thousands in just four days' time.

She will be conducting Pomp and Circumstance March No.4Ìýby Elgar, Merce, dilette amiche by Verdi and The Impossible Dream performed by Lesley Garrett and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra.

Jane Asher conducted Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor and the overture from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.

Ìý

Goldie conducted Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 and Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations.

Ìý

Sue Perkins conducted Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 in G Minor and the Finale from Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite.

About Proms In The Park, Hyde Park

Ìý

Sir Terry Wogan returns to the park on Saturday (13ÌýSeptember 2008) to introduce a host of international stars including legendary tenor José Carreras, top opera-star Lesley Garrett and virtuoso violinist David Garrett.

Proms In The Park favourites the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra return, conducted by Martin Yates, to fill the park with orchestral classics.

Ìý

The fun kicks off in the late afternoon as Aled Jones gets the party under way with ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again, all-male vocal group Teatro and boisterous 12-piece big band Bellowhead, plus more acts to be announced.

The evening culminates in a live big-screen link-up to the Royal Albert Hall, so you can sing your socks off in the irresistible sequence of familiar tunes – including Land Of Hope And Glory, Jerusalem and the National Anthem, led by the Royal Choral Society.
