Radio 3 to film live concerts for online broadcast
|
´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 is to film a series of up to 12 concerts given by its own performing groups to be broadcast on bbc.co.uk/radio3 from 26 September.
Ìý
The concerts – by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra, ´óÏó´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Singers – will first be broadcast on Radio 3's Performance on 3 (weekdays at 7.00pm) and then be made available online for audiences to watch in high quality vision, as well as hear.
Ìý
Music-lovers will be able to watch the performances, enjoy interviews with artists and composers about the music, and choose which movements or sections of the concert to watch.
Ìý
This is a natural development of Radio 3's drive to bring its unique content to audiences in a range of ways, and to continue to exploit developments in technology for the benefit of audiences.
Ìý
Radio 3 has led the way in bringing classical music to audiences in new ways with successful experiments such as The Beethoven Experience in 2005, which allowed Radio 3 listeners to download live performances of Beethoven symphonies; providing live surtitles through DAB text when Radio 3 broadcast Wagner's Ring in a day in 2007, and broadband streaming of Carmen from the English National Opera in 2007.
Ìý
Podcasting, on-demand listening through the ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer and live audio streaming online have quickly become the norm for all of Radio 3's content.
Ìý
Roger Wright, Controller, Radio 3, says: "We always want to provide our distinctive content to audiences in new ways, giving listeners a choice of how and when they can experience what we have to offer.
Ìý
"Enabling music-lovers to watch some of the excellent work of our own performing groups in high-quality sound and pictures, with insightful and informative context pieces, is an exciting enhancement."
Ìý
Fittingly, the series begins with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda, whose Beethoven Symphony Cycle was the focus of the groundbreaking successful Beethoven Experience in 2005.
Ìý
They are joined by the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and soloists including Hillevi Martinpelto, Jane Irwin, Paul Nilon and Iain Paterson – with Berio's Formazioni and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony filmed live at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
Ìý
The concert will be broadcast live on Radio 3 on 26 September and then available to watch online from the following day.
Ìý
The series continues in October with ´óÏó´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra's English Light Music performance from the Colosseum in Watford in which they play popular English music by composers including Eric Coates and Hugh Wood on 29 October (live on Performance on 3) and in November with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra's star-studded performance of Orff's Carmina Burana from the Barbican on 28 November.
Ìý
Visualisation will also continue with the Radio 3 London Jazz Festival in November when Radio 3 will not only broadcast a rich offering on air, but will also film a number of concerts for broadcast online, giving audiences exclusive access to the festival via Radio 3's website.
