Phil Daniels waltzes out of Strictly Come Dancing

It was a battle of the boys on the dance floor on ´óÏó´«Ã½ One tonight as actor Phil Daniels was voted off Strictly Come Dancing – the first celebrity to leave the competition.

Ìý

After performing a waltz, the combination of the viewer votes and judges' scores left Phil and his partner Flavia Cacace in the bottom two with Don Warrington and Lilia Kopylova.

Ìý

Both couples had to perform a second time for the judges' deciding vote.

Ìý

Of Phil and Flavia's dance the judges said –

Ìý

Arlene Phillips: "Well it's funny to see you in this position because I've worked with you and seen you as a master of your art and I was in awe of you. You need to introduce your right foot to your left foot and they need to fall in love, because they never came together. Bring them together occasionally." Score: 5.

Ìý

Bruno Tonioli: "For a bit of rough you actually scrub up quite well. It was a bit shaky and unsteady. You held your breath – you looked like you were going for a dive." Score: 5.

Ìý

Craig Revel Horwood: "The steps were all there but it lacked any grace for me. It felt a little common. The rise and fall I thought was a little lumpy. You were paddling your feet in the standing spin – very flat footed – and I don't believe you were engaged in the dance." Score: 4.

Ìý

Len Goodman: "The hold, the posture and the movements are the main things for waltz and I thought the movements were good. You've got to work on hold and posture, but for the first of the series I think you did very well." Score: 6.

Ìý

The judges gave them a total of 20 out of 40 for their performance.

Ìý

After the dance-off, Phil and Flavia were thrown a lifeline by Craig and Arlene, but Bruno picked Don and Lilia, leaving head judge Len with the casting vote.

Ìý

Len said: "They both did make some mistakes and it is very difficult to judge between a waltz that needs so much control and a cha cha cha which needs so much rhythm. But for me the performance I've just seen – the cleanest one – was Don and Lilia."

Ìý

After his and Flavia's elimination, Phil said: "It was a short ride. It's been fantastic, good fun."

Ìý

On Saturday the girls performed a group dance to Lady Marmalade ahead of their solo performances next week and it was a mixed result according to the judges.

Ìý

When asked who they will be looking out for next week, they said –

Ìý

Arlene: "I tell you, Christine [Bleakley] took my eye because the cha cha is a cheeky dance, and any opportunity she could get to have her hands all over Matthew, she did! She really stood out."

Ìý

Bruno: "Clean, sharp, sexy. I'm going to be watching next week... Rachel [Stevens]."

Ìý

Craig: "I thought Lisa [Snowdon] was very good, but if I'm going to be selective it's got to be Gillian [Taylforth] because looking at that I can't wait for next week."

Ìý

Len: "I'm going with Jessie [Wallace]. For me she was one of the few girls that wasn't looking at the floor."

Ìý

Next week the girls will compete to stay in the competition whilst the boys perform a group number but are safe from elimination for another week.
