The Queen to mark Blue Peter's 50th Birthday with tea at Buckingham Palace

Her Majesty The Queen has invited Blue Peter to a special birthday tea at Buckingham Palace to mark the 50th anniversary of the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s landmark children's programme.

Ìý

During the event Her Majesty will recognise four very special Blue Peter viewers, who will be given the surprise of their life when presenters Helen, Joel and Andy turn up at their doorstep and invite them to take tea with The Queen.

Ìý

They will be presented with a special Jubilee edition of the programme's highest award, the Gold Blue Peter Badge.

Ìý

Invited to the tea will be the current presenters Andy Akinwolere, Helen Skelton and Joel Defries, key production staff and a selection of the longest-serving presenters from each of the show's five decades.

Ìý

The film of the Palace tea party will be shown in a special extended edition of Blue Peter on Thursday 16 October 2008 at 5.15pm on ´óÏó´«Ã½ One.

Ìý

Tim Levell, Editor of Blue Peter, said: "Blue Peter has been at the heart of children's lives for 50 years, and we are absolutely delighted that The Queen is recognising this by extending the kind invitation to us.

Ìý

"Our four lucky Blue Peter viewers will have the most special day of their lives – and we hope the experience will be enjoyed by all the children watching at home."

Ìý

Former longstanding Blue Peter Editor Biddy Baxter commented: "The Queen was awarded a Gold Blue Peter Badge on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee, so what could be more fitting than Her Majesty marking Blue Peter's 50th birthday by presenting Gold Blue Peter Badges to four outstanding children."

Ìý

The new series of Blue Peter started on Tuesday 23ÌýSeptember 2008.

Ìý

Notes to Editors

Ìý

The gold badge is the programme's highest honour and is given to people who have shown outstanding bravery and courage, or have represented their country in an international event.

Ìý

The Queen herself is the owner of a Blue Peter Gold Badge having been presented with it in 2001.
