´óÏó´«Ã½ garden blooms at Rainbow Trust Children's Charity
A new sensory garden at the Rainbow Trust's respite home in Leatherhead, Surrey was unveiled this week thanks to listeners of ´óÏó´«Ã½ Southern Counties Radio.
Ìý
The Smile Garden was designed by ´óÏó´«Ã½ SCR's gardening experts Val and Steve Bradley as part of the radio station's SMILE appeal in aid of the charity.
Ìý
The Smile Garden won a bronze medal in the Small Garden Category at the prestigious Hampton Court Flower Show when it was first shown in July 2007.
Ìý
Rainbow Trust Children's Charity provides practical and emotional support to families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness.
Ìý
Key elements of the Smile Garden have been transferred to an unused area at Rainbow House to create a peaceful garden to be enjoyed for many years to come by families who stay there.
Ìý
The SMILE Appeal was launched by ´óÏó´«Ã½ Southern Counties in January 2007 and aimed to raise £50,000, but the final total topped £75,000.
Ìý
Set up in 1986, Rainbow Trust supports families in two ways. Family Support Workers provide non-medical 24-hour care in a family's own home by helping out with practical chores and offering a shoulder to cry on when things get tough. Families can also spend quality time together at one of the charity's respite homes in Northumberland and Surrey.
Ìý
Sara David, Assistant Editor at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Southern Counties Radio, said:
"We are delighted at the way the SMILE Appeal was received by our listeners, who really took it to their hearts.
Ìý
"There have been so many highlights over the last 18 months and we are all thrilled that our listeners raised this incredible amount for this very special local charity."
Ìý
Gabriella Brooks, Press and PR Manager at Rainbow Trust, said:
"The Smile Garden will be a great addition to our facilities at Rainbow House. This garden will provide a quiet sanctuary for parents and children where they can spend quality time together to recharge their batteries.
Ìý
"The SMILE Appeal has been fantastic in terms of raising our profile across Surrey and West Sussex and, of course, raising vital funds so we can support even more local families.
Ìý
"Everyone at Rainbow would like to say a huge thank you to the staff at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Southern Counties for all their efforts and of course to their incredibly generous listeners."
