Ìý

One-hundred-and-thirty of the UK's top music critics and broadcasters – from magazine editors and music writers through to DJs and producers – have taken part.

Ìý

Adele was crowned number one in Sound of 2008, followed by Duffy, The Ting Tings and Glasvegas.

Ìý

Mika and Corinne Bailey Rae are among the other previous winners.

Ìý

One of the pundits, Q magazine Editor-in-Chief Paul Rees, said: "The Sound of... has established itself as one of the touchstones for identifying the new music that will really matter in each given year.

Ìý

"And this year, as previously, the breadth of musical styles and artists covered in the list of nominees suggests that there will be no shortage of rewarding discoveries for music fans to make."

Ìý

Jeff Smith, Head of Music, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 and ´óÏó´«Ã½ 6 Music, said: "I think the Sound of... list has become an annual moment in the calendar for the music industry as well as music fans at home and internationally.

Ìý

"The industry's had another challenging year in 2008 but I don't think that will stop the best of today's newest artists coming to the top of the Sound of 2009."

Ìý

Video and audio of the top 15 artists will be available from Friday 5 December at bbc.co.uk/entertainmentnews.

Ìý

´óÏó´«Ã½ 6 Music will feature each act in the top ten on air – with live music sessions and interviews – in the week they are announced in January.

Ìý

Notes to Editors

Ìý

The participants were asked to name their three favourite new music acts. The acts could be from any country and any genre, but must not have already had a UK top 20 single or album.

Ìý

They must be new to the British general public and must not already be famous for any reason (eg: member of a hit band going solo, or soap star), or have been on TV talent shows such as X Factor or American Idol.

Ìý

The responses were counted and the 15 acts with the most votes put on the long list. The winner and top 10, in order of the number of votes received, will be revealed in the week commencing 5 January.

Ìý

The acts from 5 to 10 will be revealed on Monday 5 January, with the rest of the top 5 unveiled in a countdown throughout that week.

Ìý

One artist will be announced every day, culminating in the announcement of the number one artist on Friday 9 January.

Ìý

The list was compiled by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ entertainment news team.

Ìý

The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Sound of... series is now in its seventh year. It started with the Sound of 2003, which was won by US rapper 50 Cent.

Ìý

The other winners have been Keane (Sound of 04), The Bravery (Sound of 05), Corinne Bailey Rae (Sound of 06), Mika (Sound of 07) and Adele (Sound of 08).

Ìý

Other artists in the top fives in previous years have included Franz Ferdinand, Wiley, Razorlight and Joss Stone (Sound of 04), Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs (Sound of 05), The Feeling and Guillemots (Sound of 06), Klaxons (Sound of 07) and Duffy, The Ting Tings and Glasvegas (Sound of 08).
