´óÏó´«Ã½ Drama sweeps up in Emmy nominations

Little Dorrit

´óÏó´«Ã½ Drama picked up a spectacular 33 nominations in this year's Emmy Awards, it was announced last night.

Andrew Davies' major adaptation of Dickens'classic Little Dorrit leads the way with nominations in 11 categories, followed closely by House Of Saddam, Wallander and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

The forthcoming Into The Storm was the fourth most nominated programme, with a total of 14.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Drama Commissioning, said: "The nominations are a testament to the strength of ´óÏó´«Ã½ drama and to all the well-deserved writers, producers, directors and actors involved."

´óÏó´«Ã½ One's Little Dorrit, which was co-produced by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and WGBH Boston, will compete for the Outstanding Mini-series title, with Andrew Davies being nominated for his adaption and actors Sir Tom Courtenay and Andy Serkis doing battle in the best supporting actor category.

Kenneth Branagh won a nod for best actor in a mini-series or film for his title role as Inspector Kurt Wallander in ´óÏó´«Ã½ One's Wallander, from Leftbank Pictures, Yellow Bird and TKBC, as well as picking up a nomination in the Best Director category.

´óÏó´«Ã½ Two's gripping series House Of Saddam, a ´óÏó´«Ã½/HBO co-production, received four nominations for its intimate portrait of the world of Saddam's inner circle that charted the rise and fall of one of the world's most terrifying regimes.

There were three nominations for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ co-production, the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, adapted from the novels by Alexander McCall Smith and directed by the late Anthony Minghella – a Mirage Enterprises Production in association with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and The Weinstein Company.

Into The Storm, a HBO/´óÏó´«Ã½ Film, Scott Free and Rainmark Films Production, which has aired in the US and will be seen on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two later this year, won nominations for actors Brendan Gleeson and Janet McTeer in their roles as Winston and Clementine Churchill in the story of Churchill's pre-Second World War years.

The award winners will be announced in Los Angeles on 20 September 2009.
