Student lands ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1Xtra film job

´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1Xtra announced today that 22-year-old student Rhianna Dhillon has been confirmed as both stations' new film critic, landing her first ever job in radio.

Rhianna, who is originally from Brighton, is currently in her final year studying English with film and theatre at the University of Reading and will graduate in July.

She replaces James King, who left Radio 1 earlier this month after 13 years to spend more time on his television and writing work.

Rhianna's first on-air review will be on Greg James's show on Friday 1 April. As well as taking over the traditional Radio 1 Friday afternoon review slot, Rhianna will also lead increased movie content on air and online across all parts of Radio 1 and 1Xtra's output.

Rhianna was discovered as Radio 1 and 1Xtra's Movies Team – led by producer Andy Taylor – spoke to young film fans for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 and 1Xtra's Favourite Movies series, which counted down the nation's favourite films, as voted for by listeners.

In the lead up to the series, a wide range of young film experts around the UK were consulted including listeners, journalists, bloggers and students. Rhianna attended a Radio 1 Movies Team visit to Reading University and immediately impressed with her knowledge of film and her bright personality. She later took part in a rigorous piloting process alongside nine other young hopefuls before landing the job.

Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 and 1Xtra says: "Films are important to our young listeners. I'm looking forward to Rhianna's passion and knowledge connecting with the next generation of movie-goers when she's talking with them on Facebook, Twitter and on the radio."

Rhianna says: "I'm absolutely thrilled to have been offered this opportunity. I can't think of a more perfect job for me as it combines film and Radio 1, two things I talk about constantly! I know this will be an incredible experience and I can't wait to get started."
